Albany River Rats News Release
HARTFORD, CT - Jamie McBain and Jacob Micflikier each netted shootout markers and River Rats goaltender Justin Peters denied four-of-five Wolf*Pack attempts to earn a 2-1 shootout decision Sunday afternoon at the XL Center.
Wolf*Pack points leader Corey Locke scored on Hartford's first attempt of the shootout, but Micflikier immediately responded for Albany and McBain came-through in the third round to give the River Rats their seventh-straight win. Albany has earned a point in its last nine games and takes its three-game road winning streak to Lowell next Friday.
Peters fought-off seven shots in a Hartford-dominated overtime session, which saw the River Rats kill-off 1:32 of 4-on-3 action. With seconds remaining in the sudden-death period, a loose rebound snuck behind the Albany goalie and rolled along the goal line before being smothered by a pair of Albany defensemen to force a shootout as time expired.
The Rats swarmed Hartford early in the contest with a season-high nineteen shots in the first period and they took a 1-0 lead on rookie Chris Terry's sixth of the season, a rebound put-away from Pat Dwyer. The Wolf*Pack evened the score midway through the second period, when defenseman Matt Gilroy drove the left wing and slipped a backhand pass across the net-mouth for Derek Couture to tuck inside the far post.
Peters made the save of the game early in a scoreless third period that saw Hartford out-shoot the visitors 12-4. Brodie Dupont one-timed an uncontested rebound towards a wide-open River Rats goalmouth, but Peters bounded across the crease in a full split to make a game-saving glove save. The Wolf*Pack thought they'd taken a lead later in the frame when defenseman Corey Potter's blast from the point hit the back of the net, but the tally was immediately waived-off as forward Dale Weise had interfered with Peters.
Peters stopped 30-of-31 shots faced in the contest to earn the win as Albany improved to 17-10-1-2 this season. Johnson stopped 29-of-30 and took the loss as Hartford dropped to 14-12-1-3. The River Rats went 0-for-4 on the man-advantage and the Wolf*Pack went 0-for-5; both teams recorded 31 shots in the game.
Albany's next home game is on Sunday, December 27th against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at 5:00 p.m. River Rats 2009-10 season and flex ticket packages are now on sale at the River Rats executive offices at the Times Union Center, by calling (518) 487-2244 or by logging onto www.albanyriverrats.com.
