CHARLOTTE, NC - The AHL's defending Calder Cup Champions, the Cleveland Monsters, proudly powered by Constellation, were defeated in overtime by the Charlotte Checkers on Friday at Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte, NC by a final score of 5-4. With the overtime loss, the Monsters are now 24-22-3-4 overall this season and with a .519 points percentage, currently remain alone in fifth place in the AHL's Central Division standings.

The Monsters netted the first period's lone goal at 2:55 when Joe Devin buried an even-strength rebound with Ryan Craig and Sonny Milano collecting assists on the play. In the middle stanza, Checkers forward Andrew Poturalski tied the game at one with an even-strength goal at 4:06, before Monsters defenseman Marc-Andre Bergeron whistled a heavy wrist shot past Charlotte net-minder Alex Nedelkovic at 5:28, thanks to a five-on-five feed from T.J. Tynan, to stake Cleveland to a 2-1 advantage. Charlotte captain Patrick Brown responded, however, less than a minute later with an unassisted even-strength goal at 5:56 that leveled the score at two heading into the final period of play.

An even-strength goal from Craig lifted the Monsters back into the lead at 5:49 of the third, thanks to assists from Tynan and Oleg Yevenko, and an unassisted, five-on-five transition slap shot from Jordan Maletta at 11:59 delivered Cleveland their largest lead at 4-2, but Charlotte stormed back to tie the game at four with a Levko Koper goal at 12:18 and a Brendan Woods finish at 13:08. Then, just 34 seconds into overtime, Poturalski ended the game with a two-on-one marker that provided the Checkers with a 5-4 victory.

Cleveland net-minder Anton Forsberg finished with 28 saves in the overtime loss, dropping his record to 15-12-3 overall this season, while Nedeljkovic improved to 8-13-1 by virtue of a 25-save performance.

Next up for the Monsters, it's a Saturday rematch vs. the Checkers with full coverage, live from Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte, NC, underway at 6:00 pm on 99X and the Monsters Hockey Network.
