
Monsters Fall to Rochester 4-1

Rochester's three-goal first period propelled the visiting club to a 4-1 victory over the Lake Erie Monsters (17-19-0-3) Thursday at Quicken Loans Arena. Brad Malone, who returned to the Monsters following a stint with the National Hockey League's Colorado Avalanche, scored the Monsters only goal. The loss marks the sixth straight for the Monsters, who are back on the ice at The Q to host Hamilton Saturday at 7:00 PM.
Luke Adam netted a rebound for Rochester (18-15-3-3) at 10:45 of the opening period to take a 1-0 lead for the Americans. Under four minutes later at 14:42, Kevin Porter redirected a Jamie Tardif shot past Monsters goalie Calvin Pickard to put the Americans in front 2-0. Tardif added a third goal in the period to take a 3-0 lead for Rochester at 15:19 of the first period.
With 13 seconds left in the second period, Malone tipped a Karl Stollery point shot past Rochester goalie Nathan Lieuwen for his fifth goal of the season. Matt Hunwick also assisted on Malone's goal. The Monsters out-shot Rochester 16-8 in the second period.
Adam added an insurance marker for the Americans at 14:34 of the third period to give Rochester a 4-1 lead.
Pickard started the game and suffered the loss in net for the Monsters; he played 15:19 of game time, stopping 12 of 15 shots. His record drops to 9-10-2 on the season. Sami Aittokallio finished the game, and stopped 16 of 17 shots. Lieuwen stopped 31 of 32 shots for Rochester; he is 8-6-1.
The Monsters are back on the ice Saturday at The Q when they host Hamilton at 7:00 PM.
NOTES: The Monsters are 3-3-0-1 against Rochester this season... With an assist, Hunwick has 11 points in his last 10 games... Stollery has four points in his last four games played in a Monsters uniform... The Monsters are now 10-8-0-3 against the North Division... The Monsters are 2-7-0-0 in January and 12-7-0-1 on home ice this season... The Monsters were 1-6 on the power play and Rochester was 1-3 with the man-advantage.
