Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BROOKLYN, NY --- Brooklyn starter Scott Shaw was brillant over eight shutout innings and the Cyclones used a pair of RBI doubles in the fifth inning to best the Vermont Lake Monsters 2-0 in New York-Penn League action Wednesday night at KeySpan Park.
Shaw (2-2) allowed just four singles with no walks and four strikeouts over his eight innings for the win. Three of the four singles came with two outs in three different innings as the Lake Monsters did not get a base runner to second base all night.
Vermont's other hit was a leadoff single in the fifth from Tyler Moore, who had two of the Lake Monsters four hits. But Moore was quickly erased as Shaw got Englund to ground into a double play and then the next nine batters in order.
Brooklyn got its two runs in the fifth as Eric Campbell led off with a single and Sean Ratliff followed with an RBI double to left center for a 1-0 lead. Two outs later, Matt Smith doubled down the right-field line to score Radliff.
The pair of runs came off reliever Tommy Milone (1-3), who gave up the two runs on six hits with three strikeouts in four innings of work. Milone had taken over in the third for starter P.J. Dean, who retired all six batters that he faced in his scheduled two innings of work. Dean, who had not started since July 9th at Mahoning Valley, lowered his ERA to 0.38 overall (1 earned run in 24 innings).
The shutout was the second time that the Lake Monsters have been held scoreless in a game this season, having also been shutout 12-0 at State College on July 4th. The two-run loss dropped Vermont's record to 4-3 in two-run games and 18 of the Lake Monsters 33 games have now been decided by one or two runs.
Vermont (18-15) continues to lead the Stedler Division by 1 1/2 games despite the loss after Oneonta dropped a 5-3 decision at Batavia on Wednesday. The Lake Monsters will wrap up a five-game roadtrip on Thursday night at Brooklyn beginning at 7:00 pm.
Then the Lake Monsters, who have played just two home games since July 8th and five since June 29th, will return home to historic Centennial Field on Friday night to begin a seven-game homestand that will include four games against the Lowell Spinners and a three-game series with Brooklyn ending July 31st.
