LAST WEEK ¬â¢S HIGHLIGHTS
Vs. Portland (12/17): Left wing Bud Holloway recorded his first American Hockey League hat trick as the Manchester Monarchs defeated the Portland Pirates, 4-3, at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Friday evening. Center Andrei Loktionov joined Holloway on the scoreboard for the Monarchs. Defenseman Marc-Andre Gragnani, center Matt Ellis and right wing Mark Mancari netted goals for the Pirates. Monarchs goaltender Jeff Zatkoff (10-9-1) recorded his 10th victory of the season, making 32 saves on 35 shots on goal. Pirates netminder Jhonas Enroth (8-7-1) lost his seventh game of the season, halting 22-of-26 shots on goal. Manchester went 1-for-3 on the power play. Portland was 1-for-8 with the man advantage.
At Portland (12/18): Center Justin Azevedo gave the Manchester Monarchs their second consecutive victory over the Portland Pirates, a 2-1 overtime win at the Cumberland County Civic Center on Saturday night. Azevedo tallied the game-winning overtime goal and defenseman Thomas Hickey scored for the Monarchs in regulation. Defenseman Marc-Andre Gragnani scored the lone goal for the Pirates. Monarchs goaltender Martin Jones (8-2-0) recorded his eighth victory of the season, making 36 saves on 37 shots on goal. Pirates netminder Jhonas Enroth (8-7-2) lost his second overtime game of the season, halting 42-of-44 shots on goal. Manchester went 0-for-2 on the power play. Portland was 0-for-5 with the man advantage.
Vs. Worcester (12/19): Right wing Brandon Kozun gave the Manchester Monarchs their third consecutive victory as they topped the Worcester Sharks, 2-1, at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Sunday afternoon. Defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov and Kozun lit the lamp for the Monarchs. The Sharks picked up their lone goal from forward James Marcou. Monarchs goaltender Martin Jones (9-2-0) recorded his ninth victory of the season, making 29 saves on 30 shots on goal. Sharks netminder Alex Stalock (13-11-2) lost his 11th game of the season, halting 34-of-36 shots on goal. Manchester went 1-for-4 on the power play. Worcester was 0-for-4 with the man advantage.
MONARCHS NEWS & NOTES
The Manchester Monarchs (20-11-1-1, 42 points) lead the Atlantic Division with 42 points. The Portland Pirates (17-10-2-1, 37 points) trail the Monarchs by five points, holding on to second place in the Atlantic Division with 37 points. The Worcester Sharks (15-10-2-4, 36 points) are in third place in the Atlantic Division, as they trail Portland by one point with 36 points.
Manchester ¬â¢s power play is ranked 13th in the AHL as they have scored 28 goals on 157 opportunities for a 17.8% conversion rate. On the penalty kill, the Monarchs are ranked 12th in the league as they have given up 26 goals when they have been down a man. They have been shorthanded 160 times this season and have an 83.8% penalty kill rating.
With a hat trick in Friday ¬â¢s game against Portland and an assist in Saturday ¬â¢s game against the Pirates, left wing Bud Holloway (9-14=23) is tied with center Andrei Loktionov (5-18=23) for the Monarchs lead with 23 points each.
Holloway ¬â¢s first American Hockey League hat trick and third professional hat trick on Friday night against Portland marked the first one for a Monarchs player since Loktionov scored three goals against the Albany River Rats on October 3, 2009 in a 6-3 victory. Holloway ¬â¢s hat trick was the 19th time in team history that a Monarchs player has netted three goals in one game.
Loktionov leads the Monarchs with a plus/minus rating of plus-11.
Loktionov also leads the Monarchs in assists with 18 assists.
Defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov is third on the team with 22 points (5-17=22). Voynov leads Monarchs defenseman in assists (17) and points (22).
Voynov has collected seven points (1-6=7) in his last six games.
Center Corey Elkins (9-11=20) is fourth on the Monarchs in points with 20.
Right wing Brandon Kozun (8-10=18) collected two points (1-1=2) in Sunday ¬â¢s 2-1 win over the Sharks to move into fifth place on the Monarchs roster with 18 points.
Kozun is tied for 14th in the AHL among rookies with 18 points.
Center Justin Azevedo (10-7=17) is the team leader in goals scored with 10 and is tied for sixth place on the Monarchs with center Oscar Moller (6-11=17) with 17 points each. With an overtime goal Saturday evening against the Pirates, Azevedo is tied for second place in the AHL in game-winning goals with four.
Moller was recalled by the Los Angeles Kings on Friday, December 10 and played in his first NHL game this season in the Kings 3-2 overtime loss to the Minnesota Wild on Saturday, December 11. Moller has played in four games with the Kings this season and recorded two assists in Saturday night ¬â¢s game against the Nashville Predators to bring his points total to three points (1-2=3) on the season.
Defenseman Alec Martinez (5-11=16) is ranked eighth on the Monarchs in points with 16.
Martinez, recalled by Los Angeles on November 23, scored his first NHL goal the next evening as he scored against netminder Carey Price of the Montreal Canadiens in a 4-1 loss. Martinez has appeared in 11 games with the Kings and has three points (2-1=3). Most recently, Martinez picked up a goal and an assist against the Detroit Red Wings in the Kings 3-2 overtime win on December 4.
Defenseman Thomas Hickey (4-10=14) had a five-game point streak (2-3=5) snapped when he was held off the scoreboard on Sunday against Worcester.
Left wing David Meckler (9-4=13) is tied for second on the team in goals scored with Holloway and Elkins. Each player has nine tallies.
Left wing Richard Clune ¬â¢s 120 penalty minutes places him third overall in the league in the same category. Right wing Justin Johnson is ranked ninth in the AHL with 93 penalty minutes.
Goaltender Jeff Zatkoff has a record of 10-9-1 with a 3.10 goals-against-average and a 0.897 save percentage in 20 games this season.
Netminder Martin Jones has played in 14 games with the Monarchs and has collected a record of 9-2-0 with a 1.60 goals-against-average and a .950 save percentage.
Jones ¬â¢ 1.60 goals-against-average places him in second in the AHL in that category and his 0.950 save percentage is ranked second in the league.
