FARGO, ND - The Kansas City Monarchs' (45-23) nine-game win streak was broken in Fargo-Moorhead (40-30) as the Monarchs drop game one, 9-6.
After the Monarchs had a swift one-two-three inning, Fargo-Moorhead didn't take long to get the offense rolling. The RedHawks got two runs in the bottom of the first off of right-handed starter, Nick Travieso.
Kansas City couldn't capitalize on Casey Gillaspie's double as they send the game into the bottom of the second. Fargo-Moorhead, however, tacked on four runs to tower over the Monarchs 6-0.
After quiet third and fourth innings, the RedHawks jumped back to action in the bottom of the fifth with a home run by John Silviano. The Monarchs answered with a solo homer by Darnell Sweeney, making the score 7-1.
Gunnar Groen relieved Travieso in the middle of the bottom of the sixth, and Fargo-Moorhead kept their foot on the pedal, scoring Correlle Prime.
After the RedHawks made the call to the bull pen sending Michael Hope to the mound, the Monarchs found more success in the top of the seventh. Charcer Burks started things off with a base hit to left, then Will Kengor followed with an RBI double, scoring Burks. Kengor stole third base, then Wasinger singled to bring Kengor home, making the score 8-3.
The Monarchs didn't give up, chipping away at the RedHawks' five-run lead in the top of the eighth. A single by Darnell Sweeney, a walk by Gabby Guerrero, then a single by Gillaspie drove in one run. Then Colin Willis hit a double off the wall in right field to score another run, and the Monarchs trailed 8-5.
Dalbert Siri stepped into the game in relief for Kansas City and allowed a home run by Correlle Prime, marking the RedHawks' twelfth hit of the night and to increase the lead to 9-5.
Morgan McCullough hit a solo home run at the top of the ninth in a last-ditch effort to catch up to Fargo-Moorhead. However, the Monarchs fell short with the home run being the last run of the night, ending the game with the score 9-6.
The Monarchs will continue their stretch on the road tomorrow night in Fargo-Moorhead, first pitch is set for 7:02 p.m. The game can be heard on the Monarchs Broadcast Network with the pregame beginning at 6:30. The game will also stream on aabaseball.tv.
