Manchester Monarchs News Release
MANCHESTER, NH - The Manchester Monarchs fall short against the Providence Bruins, 3-2, in a six-round shootout at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Saturday night.
Manchester (5-7-0-1) sits in fourth place in the Atlantic Division with 11 points. The Bruins (6-6-1-0) are in second place in the Division with 13 points.
"I liked our first period tonight," said Monarch Head Coach Mark Morris. "We got a late power play goal that gave us the edge for the period. We lost a lot of momentum after the too many men on the ice penalty. We lacked a sense of urgency in the second period. We picked it up in the third period and were able to tie it. They were able to get a goal in the shootout. It was a good effort, but not good enough."
Bruins center Josh Hennessy scored the lone goal in the six-round shootout. Netminder Jeff Zatkoff stopped forwards Zach Hamill, Maxime Sauve, Jamie Arniel, Stefan Chaput and right wing Carter Camper. Monarchs right wing Brandon Kozun, right wing Linden Vey, center Andrei Loktionov, center Robbie Czarnik, center Justin Azevedo and defenseman Patrick Mullen were denied in the shootout by goaltender Anton Khudobin.
The Monarchs opened up the scoring on the power play at 19:58 of the first period. Monarchs defenseman Jake Muzzin let go a slap shot from the center point, creating a rebound in front of Khudobin. Kozun picked up the rebound and roofed it into the net for his fourth goal of the season. Loktionov grabbed his team-leading 11th assist on the goal.
Hennessy knotted it up at 1-1 on a delayed penalty call on the Monarchs at 8:08 of the second period. Hennessey carried the puck from the neutral zone down the right wing boards and wristed a shot from the bottom of the right wing face-off circle that beat Zatkoff over his right shoulder. Defensemen Ryan Button and Andrew Bodnarchuk tallied assists on Hennessy's third goal of the season.
The Bruins took the lead later in the second period with just under three minutes remaining. Bruins defenseman Zach McKelvie scored his first goal of the season, wristing a shot from the left face-off circle at 17:21 in the second frame. The shot grazed off of Zatkoff's glove and trickled over his left shoulder before finding the back of the net. Button and Hennessy tallied assists on the play.
The Monarchs were able to tie the game at 2-2 with a goal by defenseman David Kolomatis. The defenseman blasted a slap shot from the right point through traffic over Khudobin's left shoulder and into the net at 3:54 of the third period. The strike was Kolomatis' third goal of the year and included assists from left wing Richard Clune and left wing David Meckler.
Zatkoff (1-2-1) took his first shootout loss of the season stopping 26-of-28 shots in regulation and 5-of-6 shootout snipers. Khudobin (5-6-0) earned his fifth victory of the season making 27 saves on 29 shots in regulation and blanking all six shootout players.
Manchester went 1-for-5 on the power play. The Bruins were 0-for-4 with the man advantage.
