Pens Defeat B-Sens in Shootout, 2-1

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Binghamton Senators played host to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Saturday night at Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. The Penguins won in a shootout, 2-1.

Wilkes-Barre broke through for the game's first goal at 11:55 of the second period, taking advantage of a Binghamton turnover. Brandon DeFazio corralled the puck and passed to Zach Sill, who fired past goalkeeper Robin Lehner for his first goal of the season. The assist was also DeFazio's first on the year.

With 1:57 remaining in regulation, Mike Hoffman tied the score on the power play at 1-1 with his fourth goal of the season. Patrick Wiercioch and Derek Grant were credited with assists.

Neither team succeeded in scoring through the rest of regulation or overtime. While Pat Cannone and Jack Downing scored in the shootout, Wilkes-Barre did one better. Colin McDonald and former B-Sens Niko Dimitrakos each scored shootout goals for the Penguins and Brian Lerg notched the game winner in the fifth round. The Pens took the shout 3-2, and the game 2-1.

With the win, the Penguins win streak extends to six games and they remain unbeaten on the road (6-0-0-0).

Wilkes-Barre goalkeeper Brad Thiessen stopped 28 of 29 shots in regulation and three of five in the shootout, while Lehner saved 30 of 31 in regulation for the B-Sens and one of four in the shootout.

The B-Sens head on the road to take on the Hershey Bears at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday. Fans can listen live on "Binghamton's Classic Hits" BIG 107.5 (WBBI-FM) beginning 30 minutes before game time as Grady Whittenburg, the voice of the B-Sens, hosts the Countdown to Faceoff.
