Albany Devils News Release
ALBANY, NY - The Albany Devils clawed back against the Connecticut Whale only to fall in a shootout, 3-2, Saturday at the Times Union Center. Rookie Joe Whitney led the Devils offensive charge with a goal and an assist, but the Devils had their four-game home winning streak snapped.
"I thought we bent a bit at times, but didn't break," head coach Rick Kowalsky said. "They had more jump than us - no questions - but I thought some of our guys got stronger as the period went on."
Albany trailed, 2-1, midway through the third period when a high sticking penalty opened the door for the Devils. Whitney caught Kris Newbury's timber to the face, which led to an altercation between him and Darcy Zajac.
On the ensuing power-play, Whitney scored on a wrist shot from the left face-off dot at 12:16.
"Any time you get a power-play late in the game - especially later in the game whether you are tied, up by a goal or down by a goal - it's huge to capitalize on the opportunity. Darcy sticks up for me after the high stick and fired me up a little bit. It was a little more [motivation] to capitalize on that opportunity."
Whitney's goal came with a helper by Peter Harrold. Whitney leads the team for points (10), goals (5) and is tied for the lead for assists (5).
In the shootout, the Whale jumped out to a 2-0 lead after three-and-a-half rounds with goals from Mats Zuccarello and Brendan Bell. Matt Anderson kept the Devils alive in the fourth round. After a Jeff Frazee save to start the fifth, Matt Taormina struck iron on his attempt to tie the game.
Frazee finished with 26 saves in his seventh start of the season. Cameron Talbot had 18 stops for his fourth win.
Mike Sislo also scored for the Devils with assists going to Whitney and Urbom at 6:45 of the second.
The Whale received multi-point efforts by Jonathan Audy-Marchessault (1g-1a) and Wade Redden (2a).
Albany went 1-for-5 on the power-play, while Connecticut went 1-for-4.
The Devils conclude their five-game home stand on Friday, Nov. 11 with a 7 p.m. contest against the Norfolk Admirals. The game will be the last chance for fans to participate in the Devils/Price Chopper Food Drive, benefitting the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern NY. Fans who donate a nonperishable food item will receive free admission to a future Devils game.
