The Penguins first goal came at 7:27 of the first period with center Kurtis McLean scoring his third goal of the season. McLean joined center Maxime Talbot on a two-on-one breakaway. Talbot shot from the bottom edge of the right face-off circle that rattled off the far post and to McLean who flipped the puck past Monarchs goaltender Adam Hauser. Left wing Arpad Mihaly earned an assist on the goal.
Three seconds after the Monarchs killed off a penalty to defenseman Joey Mormina, Penguins center Kenny Corupe skated with the puck down the left side, deked around Hauser and narrowly edged the puck over the goal line just inside the right post. Defenseman Drew Fata and goaltender Dany Sabourin assisted on Corupe's eighth tally of the season at 7:08 of the middle frame.
The Monarchs cut the Penguins lead in half with a power play goal at 1:54 of the third period. Defenseman Mark Ardelan collected a pass from defenseman Marty Wilford at the right point. Ardelan fired a shot that right wing Lauri Tukonen tipped past Sabourin for his 12th goal of the season.
Center Matt Hussey scored the eventual game winner at 10:24 of the final stanza. Talbot gave the puck to Hussey in the right face-off circle who walked the puck in on Hauser and sent a wrist shot into the back of the net. Right wing Cam Paddock assisted on the play that made the score 3-1.
Monarchs right wing Brad Smyth brought the Monarchs to within one goal with his team leading 27th tally of the season at 12:53 of the final period. Wilford and defenseman Denis Grebeshkov cycled the puck at the points before Wilford moved to the center point and blasted a shot. Smyth was screening Sabourin and got his stick on the puck to redirect it past the goaltender.
Right wing Jonathan Filewich finished off the scoring with an insurance goal for the Penguins at 13:17 of the third period. Left wing Guillaume Lefebvre passed the puck from behind the net out front to Filewich for his 17th goal of the season.
