Carolina Mudcats News Release
Zebulon, NC --- Mobile's Paul Goldschmidt hit his third home run in two games this season, leading the Mobile BayBears to a 5-2 victory over the Carolina Mudcats at Five County Stadium on Friday night.
Goldschmidt, who homered in the first and ninth on Thursday, drilled a two-run homer in the first inning off of James Avery (L, 0-1). The Mudcats (0-2) evened up the game with two in the second against BayBears starter Wade Miley. Jake Kahaulelio hit a groundout to score Mike Costanzo and a single by Chris McMurray tied the game at 2-2. Miley left the game in the third inning with an injury after retiring Denis Phipps. Bryan Henry (W, 1-0) entered and threw 3 2/3 innings, allowing just two hits while fanning four to earn the win.
The BayBears pushed ahead in the fifth on a two-out double by AJ Pollock, which scored Taylor Harbin from second base for a 3-2 advantage.
Leading 3-2 in the ninth, the BayBears connected for back to back homers against reliever Ruben Medina's first two pitches of the season. Marc Krauss hit the net in front of the left-field scoreboard for his first of the season, with Ryan Wheeler obliterating Medina's next pitch, hitting a home run onto the crown of the right field clubhouse for a 5-2 lead.
The Mudcats had six hits in the game, with Neftali Soto and David Cook collecting doubles.
Avery worked six innings, allowing three runs on six hits.
The series continues Saturday night with Dallas Buck starting against Mobile's Charles Brewer at 6:15 PM ET.
