Jacksonville, FL - The Stars' shortstop Matt Cline hit a single to left field to tie up the game in the top of the sixth, but the Stars would fall short in the 5-4 final. The Jacksonville Suns took an early lead, thanks to a two-run jack from Jorge Padilla in the bottom of the first. The Stars put a run on the board thanks to a single from third baseman Taylor Green and a throwing error by infielder Paul Gran.
In the bottom of the third, the Suns added two more runs on a single by Ryan Curry and a double from Padilla, his third RBI of the night. Two walks from Suns pitcher Omar Poveda and a double from catcher Jonathan Lucroy added two runs on the board for the Stars. The game-tying single from Cline came off of reliever Garrett Parcell in the sixth, making it a 4-4 game.
The Stars and Suns took the tie into the bottom of the ninth, when Chris Gutierrez singled to center field to score the winning run.
Starter Dan Merklinger went four innings, giving up four earned runs on seven hits. He walked two and struck out three. Reliever Lucas Luetge took the loss, going one inning and surrendering one run on two hits.
Jacksonville starter Omar Poveda threw five innings and gave up three runs on five hits. He also walked two and struck out three. Reliever Peter Andrelczyk took the win, not allowing a single run in two innings of work.
The Stars and Suns face off again on Saturday for game three of the five-game opening series.
