MISSOULA, Mont. - Missoula split another doubleheader against the South Division, this time against the Idaho Falls Chukars with a 3-2 win in game one and a 6-2 loss in the nightcap.
In the opener of two seven-inning contests, Missoula benefited from Taylor Ard's two-run homer in the fourth inning to break open a 1-1 tie. It was Ard's second blast in his short time with Missoula.
Touki Toussaint earned his first win with Missoula and got revenge on the Chukars with two runs, both solo homers to Brandon Downes in the first and Brawlun Gomez in the fifth, and five hits. The first-round pick struck out three batters and allowed one walk to move to 1-1 through two starts.
Derek Cape gave up two hits in a shutout inning and Brody Greer faced the minimum in the seventh inning to pick up his ninth save.
Missoula's first run of the game came in the first inning when Fernery Ozuna scored off a Jake Newberry (4-4) wild pitch. Newberry pitched all six innings for the Chukars and gave up seven hits but had seven strikeouts without a walk.
In game two, Missoula (10-10, 27-31) got behind early to the Chukars and could not mount a rally. Idaho Falls scored twice in each of the first three frames to chase starter Dallas Newton (2-4) with five earned runs off six hits in three innings. Similar to the losing pitcher Newberry in game one, Newton had six strikeouts and did not walk a batter.
Idaho Falls (10-9, 30-27) scored early with back-to-back home runs by Brandon Downes and Corey Toups.
Kevin Simmons, Lawrence Pardo, and Jency Solis kept the visitors off the scoreboard over the final four innings in relief for Missoula.
Out of Missoula's four hits, two came from Maik Ehmcke while the runs were driven in from sacrifice flies from Taylor Ard and Fernery Ozuna in the fourth and fifth innings.
Idaho Falls reliever Sam Lewis (3-1) got the win with six strikeouts over 2.1 shutout innings.
Missoula continues its seven-game homestand tomorrow with a 5:05 p.m. tilt against Idaho Falls. Tickets for all Osprey games are available at the MSO Hub Box Office, by phone at (406) 543-3300 and online at MissoulaOsprey.com.
