Voyagers Game Notes: August 17 at Grand Junction

With the two teams having split the first two games of the series, game three of the four-game set between the Voyagers and Grand Junction Rockies comes up this afternoon from Suplizio Field.  

Great Falls Voyagers (8-12, 31-27) at Grand Junction Rockies (12-7, 35-22)    

RHP Dane Stone (5-1, 3.30) vs. RHP James Lomangino (2-0, 3.75)

ROCKIES EVEN SERIES

Great Falls had an early lead, but Grand Junction scored all their runs in the third and fourth innings to claim a 5-3 win Saturday night. The Voyagers took a 2-0 lead when Zach Fisher homered with two outs in the first, his fifth of the year. The Rockies scored three two-out runs in the third to briefly take the lead, but were pegged back when Patrick Palmeiro led off the fourth with a solo shot. Grand Junction then took the lead back with two runs in the fifth against Voyager starter Matt Ball,who suffered his fifth straight loss.

POLANCO'S PUNCH-OUTS

Grand Junction starter Carlos Polanco gave up three runs in six innings and collected his sixth win while striking out a new career-high 10, including four in a row at one point. In all, the Rockies staff struck out 14, the most that Great Falls has struck out in any one game this year. As a club, the Voyagers have 501 strikeouts, most in the Pioneer League.

STONE-ING THE COMPETITION

Righty Dane Stone will be on the hill this afternoon for Great Falls, making his 12th start of 2014. A two-time Pioneer League Pitcher of the Week, Stone owns the third-lowest earned run average among qualified starters in the league, at 3.30. The Miami, Fla., native has worked 60 innings so far for the Voyagers, the fourth-most in the league. Stone's 58 strikeouts are the second-most among PL hurlers, while his opponent's batting average of .257 is the league's fourth-lowest. This will be his first time facing the Rockies.  

LIFE ON THE ROAD

In last night's loss, Great Falls third baseman Patrick Palmeiro hit his seventh homer of the season, a solo shot in the fourth inning. All seven of Palmeiro's long balls have come on the road this season, as have 15 of his 20 RBIs. The Colleyville, Texas native is now hitting .362 in 18 road games this year, but just .148 in 21 games at Centene Stadium.
