Arkansas Travelers News Release
Wolff Stadium, San Antonio, Texas - The Missions scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back snapping the Travs three-game winning streak with a 6-2 defeat. Drew Macias hit a two-run double to key the rally, while Brian Baxter and Jose Lobaton also drove in a run in the Missions first. In his return to the Travs, right-hander David Austen (1-1) made it through 3.1 innings and allowed five runs on eight base hits in the loss. Shortstop Wil Ortiz led with three base hits and the Travs banged out 10 hits, but only one in the last 4 innings.
San Antonio starter RHP Stephen Faris was ineffective in 4.1 innings allowing nine base hits but just two runs. The Travs left seven runners on base in the first five innings, six were stranded in scoring position. Lefty Phillip Barzilla (1-2) struck out five batters in 4.1 innings of relief and gave up just one hit. Greg Burke retired all six batters and whiffed three he faced to wrap up the game.
The first six batters reached base in San Antonio's first inning and three runs scored before Austen got an out. Drew Macias smacked a two-run double off the left-field fence to give the Missions the lead. Brian Baxter lined a single to left field to knock in Macias for a 3-0 San Antonio edge. Austen got his first out thanks to a diving catch by Brian Stavisky off a Jose Lobaton line drive sacrifice fly. The fourth run of the inning scored and Austen got a double play to end it.
Faris kept the Travs from scoring until the fourth. Adam Greenberg lined a single and stole second base. A broken-bat infield hit by Chris Pettit moved Greenberg to third and he scored when Ortiz bounced a single to left field. The rally fizzled when Stavisky bounced into a double play and Ben Johnson struck out looking.
Austen left one batter after allowing Lopez an RBI double in the fourth inning. The Travs managed a double by Pettit and an RBI single from Stavisky to knock Faris out. But Barzilla whiffed Johnson and Nate Sutton to quell the comeback.
Left-hander Doug Brandt replaced Austen in the fourth and got two quick outs in the fifth. Lobaton drew a walk and reached third when Beamer Weems doubled to left in his first double-A at-bat. Josh Alley knocked in Lobaton with a sharp single to right, but Weems was put out at the plate on a strong throw from Pettit.
The Missions combo of Barzilla and Burke retired 13 of the last 14 batters to end the game.
Time of game was 2:41 and the announced attendance as 3,526.
Monday night the Travs finish their six-game road trip with a 7:05 p.m. tilt with the Missions. Bobby Mosebach (9-10, 4.64) is scheduled to pitch for the Travs against San Antonio RHP Will Inman (8-6, 3.12).
