Asheville Tourists News Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

KANNAPOLIS- The Asheville Tourists came close to picking up back-to-back wins against the Kannapolis Intimidators but ultimately fell short. Asheville was unable to hold an early lead and Kannapolis used a walk off single by Craig Dedelow in the bottom of the ninth to win 5-4.

The Tourists scored two runs in the top of the first. One came on an RBI single by Chad Spanberger; his team leading seventh RBI of the season. Sean Bouchard worked a bases-loaded walk later in the inning. Asheville had a great opportunity to plate more in the inning, but left the bases loaded.

In the third, Matt McLaughlin drove in Bret Boswell with an RBI single to give the Tourists a 3-0 lead. However, Asheville would leave runners on base in the third, fourth, and fifth innings without padding their advantage.

In the bottom of the fifth, Kannapolis broke through. The Intimidators plated two runs off Antonio Santos who had been cruising prior to the frame. In the sixth, Kannapolis managed two more runs and took a 4-3 lead.

The Tourists responded in the top of the seventh. Spanberger was hit by a pitch and took second on a passed ball. With two away, Boswell shot a groundball through the left side of the infield and Spanberger raced home from second base.

The score remained 4-4 after Ben Bowden struck out three Intimidators in the bottom of the eighth. However, the ninth inning saw Kannapolis load the bases with only one out. Dedelow then hit a fly ball deep down the left field line. Asheville's only hope was for the ball to land foul. It stayed fair by a few feet and the winning run raced home from third.

The rubber match between Asheville and Kannapolis takes place on Wednesday morning. The first pitch is scheduled for 10:05am.
