Miscues Lead to Series Opening Loss against Rockford

Traverse City Pit Spitters News Release

Rockford, IL - The Traverse City Pit Spitters (1-2) committed four errors and walked eight batters in a 6-2 loss against the Rockford Rivets.

After taking 16 of the last 17 games against Rockford, Traverse City looked like the inferior team Wednesday night. Four Rockford runs scored in the bottom of the third on an error, three walks and a single.

The Pit Spitters showed life in the sixth, loading the bases with nobody out. Alec Atkinson hit a hard-line drive to center for a sacrifice fly. After a walk to reload the bases, Lukas White dumped a single into right field to score one, but Jake Smallwood was thrown out trying to score another run. After loading the bases for a third time, the Pit Spitters left them loaded to end the inning.

Rockford would get both runs back, however. An error and a couple walks allowed one to score in the bottom of the sixth. Another scored on a triple in the bottom of the seventh.

Traverse City managed to get a couple runners on in the ninth but couldn't get the rally going, falling 6-2.

For the second straight game, the Pit Spitter defense committed four errors. Add in eight walks and Rockford walked away with a four-run win despite managing only three hits.

The Pit Spitters will conclude their four-game road trip before the home opener Friday night. First pitch Thursday is scheduled for 7:35 ET.
