Ottawa Titans News Release
Ottawa, ON - The Ottawa Titans (9-4) won their second in a row, defeating the Sussex County Miners (5-7) by a 6-2 final on Friday, continuing what has been the franchise's hottest start to a season.
It was a pitching duel through the first six frames. Kevin Miranda (ND, 0-0) made his debut on the mound for the Titans opposite Billy Parsons (ND, 0-1), who got the start for the Miners.
Miranda looked dominant right away, generating two swing-and-miss strikeouts to close out the first. Parsons matched him, staying perfect through three and two-thirds innings and punching out four.
Jackie Urbaez broke through in the fourth, reaching on a bunt single to become the Titans' first baserunner of the night with an infield hit.
Both starters went six scoreless frames. Miranda was equally sharp, punching out six while allowing four hits and one walk. Parsons finished with eight strikeouts, three hits allowed, and no walks. Both starters took no decisions, as the series opener remained scoreless.
The scoring started in the bottom of the seventh. Aaron Casillas put the Titans on the board with an RBI double, and Michael Fuhrman reached on an error to bring another home, making it 2-0. For Casillas, he now has doubles in five consecutive games.
The lead didn't last long. Edwin Mateo and Mahki Backstrom each drove in runs off Heitor Tokar (win, 2-0) to tie the game.
Colin Kelly (loss, 0-2) came on in the eighth and immediately walked the first two batters, then hit the third to load the bases with nobody out. The Miners turned to Parker Primeaux to try getting out of the jam, but Primeaux walked Christian Inoa to put Titans back in front 3-2. Cardoso added a run on a groundout, and Myles Smith plated two more with a single, giving the Titans a 6-2 lead heading into the ninth.
Brett Garcia came on to finish it, retiring the Miners in order and striking out two.
Tokar earned the win with two innings pitched, allowing two runs on two hits and a walk. Inoa went two-for-three with an RBI, but it was Miranda who earned Player of the Game honours for his dominant debut on the hill.
The Ottawa Titans continue a three-game series with the Sussex County Miners on Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. at Ottawa Stadium. After the homestand, the Titans will end the month of May on the road with a six-game series against the Down East Bird Dawgs in Kinston, North Carolina. All the action can be heard on the Ottawa Titans Radio Network and 94.5 Unique FM, and live streamed on Frontier League TV powered by HomeTeam Network.
