Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, Ind. - The RailCats rode Daniel Minor and a steady offensive attack in taking the rubber game over the Sioux Falls Canaries by an 8-0 score. The win caps off a 5-1 homestand for the RailCats, who re-gained first place in the North Division with the win and Fargo-Moorhead's loss. The series victory is the fourth straight for the RailCats, who have won 10 of their last 12 games.
Minor (11-2) earned his eighth straight victory in style, striking out Jordan Dean with the bases loaded and two outs in the 9th on his 136th pitch of the night, running his consecutive scoreless streak to 16 1/3 innings and earning his league-best 11th win of the season.
Gary (34-27) scored first for the eighth straight game, taking the lead on Tillman Pugh's opposite-field home run with one out in the first. They would tack on another run an inning later on Andy De Jesus' RBI single, scoring Reggie Wilson.
Meanwhile, Minor would work on another masterpiece, retiring the first ten Canaries hitters to begin his outing.
His offense would double that early lead in the fourth as De Jesus came through again, this time with a bases-loaded single that plated two runs and chased Sioux Falls (26-37) starter Tyler Wolfe (1-3). Wolfe was charged with loss after allowing four runs on four hits, two walks and three strikeouts over 3.2 innings.
The RailCats would only pad the lead, as Ronnie Mitchell smashed an RBI double off the right field wall in the fifth that drove in Randy Santiesteban.
Two innings later, Santiesteban returned the favor, driving in Garrett Copeland with an RBI double off the left field wall. Andy Paz would follow with his own double two batters later to increase the lead to 7-0. Wilfredo Gimenez would then make it a three-run frame with an RBI single to score Paz.
Minor would retire nine straight hitters from the sixth through eighth, then went out for the ninth to finish what he started. The first two men would reach in the ninth. However, Minor would retire the next two men. An infield single would load the bases, but Dean chased a 2-2 slider in the dirt for Minor's eight strikeout, completing his second shutout of the season, and the first nine-inning shutout of his career.
Gary is idle on Thursday before embarking on a six-day, seven-game road trip in Texas against the Cleburne Railroaders. The RailCats start their road trip on Friday with a doubleheader (two seven-inning games) against Cleburne. Game one of Friday's doubleheader is at 5 p.m. with game two following 30 minutes after the completion of game one. Neither team has announced their starters for Friday's doubleheader.
