Canaries Drop Game to RailCats Despite Another Bergin Homer

July 25, 2018 - American Association (AA)
Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

David Bergin hit a ball halfway up the scoreboard on Tuesday at the U.S. Steel Yard, but it would be the only RBI hit of the night for the Sioux Falls Canaries in a 15-3 loss to the Gary SouthShore RailCats.

Gary SouthShore got out in front early, plating three runs in the first inning off of Canaries starter Miles Nordgren. Randy Santiesteban drove in the first with an RBI double, and Andy Paz capped off the scoring with an RBI triple.

Nordgren would allow six runs (four earned) on nine hits over four innings of work.

The Canaries trailed 6-0 after four, having not registered a hit. Jabari Henry scored the Birds' first run in the fifth.

Henry reached on a two-base error by Gary SouthShore right fielder Colin Willis, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a passed ball.

With the Gary SouthShore lead cut to 6-1, Bo Hellquist replaced Nordgren on the mound for Sioux Falls. Hellquist had a rough fifth inning, allowing seven runs on three hits. He allowed five free passes in the innnig (two walks and three hit batters), three of which with the bases loaded.

The RailCats scored seven in the frame to take a 13-1 lead.

Bergin responded for the Birds with a two-run shot off the Steel Yard's left-field scoreboard. It was his eleventh home run of the year and his sixth in four games.

Bergin has now homered in four straight games, something no Canary had done this year.

Chad Martin threw the last three innings for Sioux Falls, allowing two runs in the sixth to put the final score at 15-3.
