Sussex County Miners News Release
Augusta, NJ - Trailing by a run with two out and nobody on in the bottom of the ninth, the Sussex County Miners (60-32) once again showed their resiliency and came from behind to defeat the Quebec Capitales (53-41) by a score of 4-3 in front of 3,345 fans at Skylands Stadium. With the win, the Miners match the Capitales 2011 record of 40 home wins in a single season, as well as reduce their magic number to clinch the Can-Am League regular season championship down to 2.
After back-to-back singles in the top of the third inning gave Quebec a 2-0 lead, the Miners would answer with one of their own in the bottom of the frame. Jarred Mederos would extend his hitting streak to nine games with a double, and score on a Breland Almadova RBI single to cut the Capitales lead to 2-1.
From there, Kenny Koplove and Lazaro Blanco would lock in a pitcher's duel, with both hurlers going seven innings. Each team would have opportunities during the course of the middle innings, but could not push runs across. But it would be Martin Figueroa to capitalize for the Miners in the bottom of the seventh inning. Figueroa would launch an 0-1 pitch over the right field wall to lead off the Miners half to tie the game at two runs apiece.
Quebec would regain the lead in the eighth on a TJ White sacrifice fly against Miners reliever Matt Kostalos (3-3), which would set the stage for the dramatics before the fireworks in the ninth.
With two men out and no one on against Capitales closer Trevor Bayless (3-5), Figueroa would work a four-pitch walk. Pinch hitter Nick Zaharion would then come up and bounce a single through the left side to set up runners at first and second. Christian Correa would then be the next man up, and he'd line a pitch that would score Figueroa and tie the score at three. With Jayce Ray on at second - he had come on as a pinch runner for Zaharion before the Correa at bat - the Miners would see Mederos step up to the plate again. After laying off two tough pitches, Mederos would line a 2-2 offering into center field, scoring Ray and sending the Saturday night crowd into delirium and giving the Miners the 4-3 win before the post-game fireworks capped off a thrilling day at Skylands Stadium.
The Miners and Capitales will finish their season series tomorrow afternoon at 4:05 pm at Skylands Stadium.
