(Marion, IL) - The Southern Illinois Miners (36-25) scored their first five runs via the long ball as they knocked off the Florence Freedom (25-34) by a final score of 9-3 Sunday night.

The Freedom jumped on the board first as Cole Miles doubled to lead-off the game. He would eventually score on a Rob Kelly RBI single to make it 1-0 in favor of Florence.

The Miners got right to work in the bottom of the first inning against Freedom starter Michael O'Neal (1-2). Marquis Riley walked to start the frame and stole second base. With one out Niko Vasquez was hit by a pitch. A Frank Martinez ground-out moved both runners over. O'Neal got two strikes on Chris Burke but the Southern Illinois slugger launched a three-run home run to make it 3-1 Miners.

The game remained 3-1 in favor of Southern Illinois until the fifth. Ed Kohout had tossed a couple scoreless innings in relief of O'Neal but he hit Vasquez to start the frame. Martinez stepped to the plate and smacked a two-run home run to extend the Southern Illinois lead to 5-1.

A Vasquez RBI double in the sixth increased the advantage to 6-1 before Sam Eberle hit his sixth home run of the season to cut the lead to 6-2 in the top of the seventh.

However that was as close as the Freedom would get as the Miners added one in the seventh and two in the eighth to extend their lead to 9-2.

Rob Kelly hit his sixth home run of the season as the Freedom pulled to within six in the top of the ninth but it was too little too late. Florence only recorded five hits in the game.

Miguel Ramirez (5-4) tossed a complete game to pick up the victory for the Miners.

The Freedom will try to even the series Monday night as they send Casey Henn (5-4, 2.91 ERA) to the mound. First pitch is set for 8:05 p.m. eastern time and all the action can be heard on http://www.allinbroadcasting.com/Florence.html.
