Evansville, IN-The Evansville Otters moved into a first-place tie with the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, as they stole game one of a pivotal three-game set by a final score of 9-3 Sunday at Bosse Field.

The Otters, who remained one game behind the Wild Things in the Frontier League East Division standings before Sunday's contest, scored six times off of Washington's starter Alex Kaminsky as he was relieved by Matt Sergey after just three innings of work.

After a scoreless first for the Wild Things, leadoff batter and centerfielder John Schultz and designated hitter Shayne Houck both tattooed solo home runs to give Evansville an early 2-0 lead. However, Washington quickly answered in the top half of the next inning off a two-run single by center fielder Danny Poma to plate first baseman William Beckwith and catcher Jim Vahalik tying the game at two.

But, in the bottom of the third, more of the Otters lumber came into play as a solo home run by left fielder Chris Sweeney and a three-run jack by shortstop Phillip Wilson put the Otters at a comfortable 6-2 advantage. With bases loaded in the fourth, Evansville catcher Kolin Conner drew a four pitch walk by Sergey to drive in Houck and go in front 7-2.

Washington's shortstop Ryan Kresky pushed across the final score for Washington in the game as a sacrifice-fly made it a 7-3 ballgame.

Evansville battled back for two more insurance runs later in the game as Houck hit a RBI single producing the eighth run and Chris Sweeney plated a run off a fielder's choice riding the Otters to a crucial 9-3 win.

The two teams battle Monday in a scheduled doubleheader at 6:35 p.m. EST. Follow the live in-game updates on Twitter @washwildthings.
