Grizzlies Drop Series Opener against Greys

SAUGET, Ill. - The Frontier Greys jumped out to an early 6-0 lead and never looked back in a 9-4 win against the Gateway Grizzlies Sunday night.

Gateway (37-25) has now lost a season-high four straight games and eight straight at home. With the River City loss Sunday, Gateway remains just one and a half games out of first place in the West Division.

The Greys (20-42) received a solo home run from Greg Bachman in the first inning and a grand slam from Jon Dziomba in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead.

Jon Minucci added a run-scoring single for the Greys in the third inning to extend the lead to 6-0.

Gateway came within two runs in the fourth inning, scoring four runs on three hits and one Greys error. Landon Hernandez brought in two runs on a single while Madison Beaird picked up a fielder's choice RBI and Michael Johnson collected an RBI groundout.

A Frank Florio sacrifice fly in the fifth inning made the score 7-4 and finished the night for Kerry Kelley (2-4).

Kelley allowed seven runs on nine hits in four and a third innings.

Bachman drove in a run on a single and Chris Ellison picked up a sacrifice fly as part of a two-run eighth inning to finish the scoring.

Landon Hernandez and TJ Bennett both went 2-for-4 to lead Gateway offensively.

Gateway enjoys an off day Monday before concluding their series with the Greys on Tuesday night at 7:05. Right-hander Aaron Newcomb (8-3) will make the start at GCS Ballpark.
