New York Boulders News Release

The Sussex County Miners got four RBIs from Joey Rose and three hits, two RBIs and a pair of runs scored by Juan Kelly and outlasted the New York Boulders, 12-9, on Friday night at Skylands Stadium in Augusta, NJ.

Zach Kirtley had two hits and scored three times in the loss for the Boulders, while Gian Martellini had three hits.

The Miners trailed 2-0 after one inning, then led 8-2 through two frames, only to watch that lead disappear before going ahead for good with a four-run fifth stanza that gave them a 12-8 lead.

In that fifth inning, Sussex County got RBI singles from Aaron Knapp, Eric Jenkins and Audy Ciriaco and added another on a throwing error by New York catcher Gian Martellini, the outburst giving the home team a 12-8 advantage.

The Boulders did get a run back in the top of the sixth on an error by Miners' shortstop Cito Culver to close to within 12-9.

The game was a sloppy one for Sussex County as the Miners committed six errors.

Trailing 2-0, the Miners got to Boulders' starter Brandon Bingel for eight runs in the second inning. Kelly led off the frame with a walk which was followed by a two-run home run to left by Rose.

After getting Cito Culver to line out to right, Bingel walked the next three batters to load the bases. Jenkins popped out, but Chuck Taylor walked to force in a run and Ciriaco was hit by a pitch to force in another. Kelly's single then scored two before Rose delivered a double to right, his second hit of the inning, that scored two more runs, giving him four RBIs for the frame, and increasing the Sussex County lead to 8-2.

However, that lead vanished over the next two innings.

The Boulders had jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead on an RBI double by Kevonte Mitchell and a sacrifice fly from Ryan Ramiz. New York got another run back in the top of third to make it 8-3 when Kirtley doubled and eventually scored on a balk by Miners' starter Alexander Vargas.

The Boulders then leveled the scoreboard at 8-8 with a five-run fourth inning as they parlayed four hits, a walk and three Miners' errors to tie the game. Zach Penprase and Martellini had RBI singles in the inning, while three runs scored on Sussex County errors.

Neither starting pitcher lasted long in this one. Bingel was pulled after two innings and eight runs, while Vargas got one out in the fourth before getting the hook and allowing eight runs, only three of which were earned.

Gavin Sonnier picked up the win for the Miners, going 2 2/3 innings in relief and surrendering only one unearned run on one hit.

Andrew Hammond, in his Boulders' debut, took the loss. He allowed four runs in four innings.
