Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Miami Marlins announced a transaction that impacts their Double-A affiliate Jacksonville Suns roster prior to tonight's game against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium at 7:30 p.m. ET.
Six-time major league All-Star and 2002 American League Most Valuable Player Miguel Tejada has been placed on a minor league rehab assignment off the restricted list with Jacksonville. Tejada is finishing a 105-game suspension he began serving last season after testing positive for an amphetamine, and the suspension ends on June 7.
The 40-year-old infielder was signed by the Marlins on May 19, and this will be his first game action of the 2014 season. Tejada was with the Kansas City Royals last season, where he hit .288 with three homers and 20 RBI in 53 games before he was suspended on August 17.
In 16 major league seasons, Tejada is a career .285 hitter with 307 home runs and 1302 RBI. He has played for the Oakland Athletics (1997-2003), Baltimore Orioles (2004-07, 2010), Houston Astros (2008-09), San Diego Padres (2010), San Francisco Giants (2011), and the Royals in 2013.
In addition to being a six-time All-Star (2002, 2004-06, 2008-09), Tejada is a two-time winner of the Silver Slugger Award (2004, 2005), and led the American League with 150 RBI in 2004. On July 12, 2004, Tejada won the Century 21 All-Star Home Run Derby at Minute Maid Park in Houston with 27 home runs in the contest. A year later, Tejada was the 2005 Major League All-Star Game MVP at Comerica Park in Detroit.
Tejada is a former Southern Leaguer, as he spent the 1997 season with the Huntsville Stars, who were affiliated with Oakland at the time. In 128 games Tejada hit .275 with 22 homers and 97 RBI, and he received his first MLB call-up later that season to the Athletics.
The Suns roster now stands at 25 active players, plus Tejada on his rehab assignment, and a revised roster is attached.
Tonight the Suns are set to start right-hander Jose Urena (5-2, 4.17) in game one and he'll be opposed by Pensacola righty Daniel Corcino (4-4, 3.66). Suns fans can listen to Saturday's game on the Suns Baseball Network, 94.1 WSOS-FM or throughwww.jaxsuns.com, MiLB.com or the Suns iPhone or Android app, beginning at 6:50 p.m. ET with the Memorial Hospital Suns Pregame Show.
