Jackson Generals News Release

JACKSON, TENN. - The red-hot Huntsville Stars won their eighth straight 7-3 over the Generals in the series opener (22-33) on Saturday at The Ballpark at Jackson. Huntsville used a five-run top of the seventh inning to break a 2-2 tied to improve to a minor league best 39-17. Jackson is 22-33 and 11 games below .500 for the first time this season.

Huntsville took an early lead in the second inning as Mitch Haniger led off the inning with his first triple of the season. He scored on a single by catcher Adam Weisenberger and the Stars led 1-0.

The Stars added another tally in the third as Nick Ramirez scored the second Huntsville run of the night. The Stars hit back-to-back-to-back singles with one out and Ramirez scored on the Mitch Haniger's single as the lead grew to 2-0.

Jackson dented the scoreboard in the sixth on a bizarre play. With one out and Jamal Austin (2x4, R, 3B) on third following a leadoff triple, Leon Landry (0x2, R, RBI) hit a fly ball to left-center field. Left fielder Kentrail Davis and center fielder D'Vontrey Richardson collided and the ball dropped. Austin scored easily and Landry scored as well on what was called a four-base error, but SAC fly for Landry. The game was tied 2-2 heading to the seventh.

The wheels came off the Generals train in the top of the seventh. Huntsville sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning, scored 5 runs and stranded the bases loaded. Two bases loaded walks contributed to the Stars runs along with RBI singles from Richardson, Haniger, and Nick Shaw. Jackson pitching did strike out the side to get out of the inning, but Huntsville led 7-2.

Jackson added a run in the bottom of the ninth as Mike Dowd (1x3, R) scored from third on a double play. The Generals climbed no closer, however, as Huntsville earned the 7-3 victory.

Tyler Cravy (8-1, 1.76) improved on his impressive first half as he earned his eighth win on the season. He went 6.0 innings and gave up only two runs on five hits. Richard Vargas (0-1, 5.81) struggled in relief and picked up the loss for the Generals. Jackson starter Tyler Olson did not factor into the decision allowing two runs on six hits over 5.0 innings on the mound.

Austin and Dan Paolini (2x4) were the bright spots in the Jackson lineup as they each had two hits. Mickey Wiswall (0x4) went 0-for-4, snapping his club-high 12-game hit streak. Patrick Kivlehan (0x3) also snapped his 9-game hitting streak as he went 0-for-3 on the night.

The Generals and Stars will play game two of the five-game series on Sunday. Matt Anderson (0-2, 8.38) will get the start for Jackson as Huntsville will have Drew Gagnon (4-1, 2.27) on the hill. The game will be at 6:05 pm and can be heard on 96.5 ESPN, TuneIn Radio and jacksongeneralsbaseball.com.
