
Barons Outlast Smokies in 2-1 Pitchers Duel

Birmingham, AL - The Birmingham Barons defeated the Tennessee Smokies 2-1 in their series opener Saturday night in front of 6,819 fans at SmokiesPark.
Joel Pineiro and Nick McCully engaged in a classic pitchers duel for much of thegame with Tennessee holding a 1-0 lead into the 7th inning after an RBI double by Dustin Geiger in the 4th.
The Barons mustered just one hit over the first six innings before Trayce Thompson led off the 7th inning with a solo home run against Pineiro, hisfifth home run of the season.
McCully and Pineiro each took a no-decision allowing a run on three hits over 7.0 IP each.
Birmingham took their first lead of the game in the 9th in an inning that started with a leadoff single by Keenyn Walker. Walker went to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Thompson, stole third base and scored on a wild pitch by Hunter Cervenka (2-1, 1.77).
Brandon Hardin allowed two singles in the ninth but was able to retire the Smokies without allowing a run, earning his first Double-A save as the Barons prevailed in a comeback 2-1 win.
The Smokies outhit the Barons 5-4 in the game but the Barons improved to to 24-32 with their fourth win in the last five games. Meanwhile Tennessee dropped their fifth-straight game falling to 26-29 on the season. The Barons will head on the road Saturday for a five-game series against the Tennessee Smokies.
The Barons will look to make it two-straight wins over the Smokies on Sunday afternoon as RHP Chris Beck (3-6, 3.79) takes the hill against RHP Corey Black (2-4, 3.28). First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM CDT.
