Miguel Pinango tosses no-hitter, B-Mets sweep Sea Dogs

Binghamton Mets right-hander Miguel Pinango fired a no-hitter against the Portland Sea Dogs Sunday afternoon at Hadlock Field in a 7-0 victory in game two of a twin bill. The Mets swept the Sea Dogs in a doubleheader Sunday afternoon and swept the four game weekend series pulling within 4.5 games of the first place Sea Dogs.

Pinango took a perfect game into the final frame, after retiring Jacoby Ellsbury to start the inning, Matt Van Der Bosch reached on a throwing error by shortstop Corey Ragsdale. Pinango then retired the next two batters for the no-hitter. Pinango improves to 5-6 on the season and lowered his ERA to 3.83. Frank Brooks suffered the loss, he drops to 1-2.

The Binghamton offense was led by Jay Caligiuri who hit a grand slam in the 3rd inning off Portland starter Frank Brooks.

It was the fourth no-hitter thrown against the Sea Dogs and the first since August 2, 2003 when Bob Keppel of the Binghamton Mets tossed a nine inning no-hitter against the Sea Dogs in Binghamton. It was just the second no-hitter ever thrown at Hadlock Field.

In game one Portland blew a 4-2 lead. Portland starter Chris Smith was roughed up for seven runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings of work. His record drops to 9-5 on the season. Luis Jimenez paced the Sea Dogs offense with two hits including his team leading 15th home run off the season.

The Mets exploded for four runs in the sixth inning with back-to back home runs by Corey Ragsdale and Mike DeFelice. Michel Abreu added two home runs of his own to pace the B-Mets to a 9-6 victory. Robert Paulk (4-2) earned the win for Binghamton and Henry Owens notched his 13th save of the season.

Notes: Jacoby Ellsbury's ten game hitting streak came to an end in game two. Ellsbury had collected a hit in every game at the Double-A level since being called-up. The Sea Dogs lost four in a row at Hadlock Field for the first time this season.
