Connecticut Defenders News Release

Another big first inning for the Phillies set the scene for another Defenders loss by a score of 6-0. With the loss, the Defenders conclude their twelve game road trip with a 3-9 record.

For the third straight game, the Reading Phillies struck early with the bats. In the bottom of the 1st inning in a scoreless game with a runner on first base an two outs, Pedro Swann ripped an RBI double off the wall. After a walk to Joey Hammond, Brandon Gemoll doubled in two more runs, making the score 3-0, Phillies. Defenders starter James Garcia would not survive the 3rd inning as he walked in a run, and did not record an out. R.D. Spiehs would come on and avoid any further damage with the bases loaded no out jam, but the Defenders still found themselves behind 4-0.

J.A. Happ was fantastic for Reading, allowing only three hits in seven shut out innings pitched while striking out nine Defenders. His team would get him two more runs in the 6th inning, to make the score 6-0. That would be the final score as the Phillies cruised to the win and the sweep of the Connecticut Defenders.

The Defenders return to Dodd Stadium for the first time in the second half of the season. The will turn to right-hander Chris Begg (8-9) to be the stopper. He will be faced by Bowie right-hander James Johnson (8-5). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
