July 2, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK - Cory Middleton delivered a two-out, bases loaded single in the bottom of the tenth to lift the Whitecaps to a 5-4, 10 inning victory over Wisconsin. The win completes the third four game sweep achieved by West Michigan this season and the second in the past week.
Middleton snapped a 1-for-28 slump with his line drive over the head of center fielder Alex Gary. Cameron Maybin scored the winning run.
Mike Hernandez went deep for the third consecutive game. His seventh home run of the season led off the fourth and put West Michigan on top, 1-0.
The Whitecaps carried a 4-1 lead into the top of the ninth, but Gary blasted his second home run of the season to right with one out. The three-run shot tied the game, 4-4. It was only the third time in 21 opportunities this season that West Michigan closer Orlando Perdomo blew a save.
Erik Averill threw six innings with one run allowed for the âCaps and Ricky Steik followed with a pair of shutout innings to set up the ninth.
Matt Joyce had a pair of RBI for the Whitecaps to bring his season total to 52, which is fourth-best in the Midwest League. Mike Hollimon tripled before Joyce drove him home on a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
