Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA (July 2, 2006) Yusuf Carter belted a pair of home runs and drove in four to lead the Peoria Chiefs (6-5, 47-33) past the Burlington Bees (4-7, 39-39) by a final score of 9-2 at Community Field this afternoon. Carter had a grand slam and drove in five last night, giving him three homers and nine RBI in the last two days. After winning the first two games at O'Brien Field in Peoria, the Bees drop the last two games of this series at home and have to settle for a split. Peoria leads the season series 10-2.

The Chiefs got on the board with five runs in the top of the fourth against Bees starter Mario Santiago, making his Bees debut today. Ryne Malone led off with a double and scored two batters later on another double by Ryan Norwood. A base hit by Kyle Reynolds set up Carter's first homer, a three-run shot that extended Peoria's lead to 4-0. Alberto Garcia made it back-to-back homers with a solo shot to left for a 5-0 Chiefs lead. Santiago (0-1) would get out of the fourth and work through the fifth without allowing anymore runs, but got the loss. Yovany Damico followed with three innings in relief and allowed two runs in the eighth. With the bases empty and one out, Carter belted his second homer of the day over both walls in left to extend the Chiefs lead to 6-2. Garcia followed with a double to right-center field, went to third on an error, and pinch-runner Davy Gregg scored on a single by Blake Lalli. Only the home run was an earned run against Damico. Cody Harkcom pitched the top of the ninth and gave up the final two runs. Jesus Valdez delivered an RBI double and Malone scored on a groundout by Norwood. There was an error early in the inning and only one of the two runs against Harkcom was earned.

Chiefs starter Matt Weber was making his first Midwest League start of the year after joining the Chiefs from high-A Daytona in the Florida State League. The Bees had three hits in the first, but a caught stealing after the first hit kept the team off the scoreboard. Weber allowed a hit and hit two batters in the second, but a doublt a double play helped him out of that inning. Weber came out after four and wasn't eligible for a win. Jesse Estrada (5-1) pitched three innings in relief and picked up the victory. Estrada gave up both of the Bees runs in the sixth. Miguel Vega led off with a solo homer to left. Brady Everett walked and scored on a two-out double by Ethien Santana. Jon Mueller finished the final two innings for the Chiefs and allowed just one hit.

The Bees go back on the road to start at four-game series at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids tomorrow afternoon. RH Carlos Rosa (6-4, 2.89) will start for the Bees against RH Stephen Marek (8-1, 2.08) of the Kernels. The game will start at 2:00 and will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 1:40.
