Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The Swing of the Quad Citites stranded a season-high 14 base runners while getting swept by the South Bend Silver Hawks in a 4-3 loss at Stanley Coveleski Regional Stadium on Sunday night.
The loss is the fifth in a row for Quad Cities (4-7, 38-41), their longest losing streak of the season. The Swing have now lost seven-of-eight games to South Bend (9-2, 42-35), including all four extra inning affairs the two teams have takes part in this season.
After leaving the bases loaded in the top of the tenth inning, the Swing headed into the bottom of the tenth in need of a strong pitching performance from reliever Danny Bourne. South Bend's Riocardo Sosa led off the bottom half of the frame with a single, later being moved up one base following an intentional walk to Trey Hendricks. Scott Vander Weg then came on to try to stop the bleeding for the Swing, inheriting two base runners with just one out. Orlando Mercado stepped up to the plate and drove the second pitch he saw from Vander Weg to left field to drive in Sosa for the game winning run.
Bourne (0-2) took the loss, pitching 1.1 innings of relief work. Bourne was shaky throughout his appearance, giving up leadoff singles in both the ninth and tenth innings, as well as two intentional walks.
For the second straight night, Quad Cities scored the first run of the game. But the Silver Hawks put up single runs in the third and fourth inning to take back the lead.
With the momentum shifting almost every inning, Quad Cities went out on the attack in the top of the sixth inning following a stellar defensive play in the bottom of the fifth inning from right fielder Chad Gabriel. With the bases loaded and two outs, South Bend's Justin Upton sent a fly ball to deep right field that Gabriel was able to track down before it reached the fence. This superb defensive play led the Swing into a sixth inning in which Jose Martinez's RBI double scored Tyler Greene to put Quad Cities down by just one run.
Despite the run put on the board by the Swing in the sixth inning, South Bend still held a 3-2 lead going into the top of the ninth inning.
For the second time in the series, though, South Bend was unable to hold a save situation. With Kyler Newby on to close out the game, Jon Jay walked to lead off the ninth inning, setting up another game-tying chance for Quad Cities. Colby Rasmus doubled, driving in Jay, to tie the score at 3-3, and eventually send the game into extra innings.
Both starting pitchers in the game, the Swing's Daniels (4-6), and South Bend's Anthony Cupp (5-4) took no decisions in the back-and-forth extra innings affair. Daniels allowed three runs - two earned - while fanning four and walking three batters in 5.2 innings pitched. For the Silver Hawks, Cupp went seven strong innings, allowing just two runs on seven hits.
Despite blowing the save in the top of the ninth inning, Newby (2-1) was still able to record the victory, as he was the pitcher of record when South Bend won the game in the bottom of the tenth. Newby gave up two hits, as well as two walks in two innings of work.
