Devil Rays cast magic on Wizards

July 2, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release

The Rays won last night and they liked the feeling. They liked the feeling so much that they destroyed the Fort Wayne Wizards Sunday afternoon by a score of 10-1. The Devil Rays hit lights out in three of the four games against Fort Wayne. It started Thursday night when they had 15 hits. Saturday night they set a season high 17 hits and followed that up with a 16 hit performance on Sunday.

J.T. Hall tied the franchise record for hits in a game with five. This record is shared by ten former Battle Creek players including big-leaguer Shea Hillenbrand. Hall went 5-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. He hit an absolute bomb over the right field wall in the sixth inning off of Nathan Staggs. It was Hall's sixth round tripper of the season.

Matt Walker took the start for the Baby Rays and was phenomenal in his C.O. Brown debut. Walker pitched seven shutout innings and fanned four while allowing only two hits. The two hits that Walker gave up were both from the Wizards gigantic first baseman, Kyle Blanks. One of which was a shot to left field which Blanks tried to stretch to a double but was thrown out by a perfect toss from J.T. Hall. During his performance, Walker retired 13 consecutive batters. He got the win and lowered his ERA to 1.54.

Every Devil Rays batter registered a hit except shortstop Neil Walton who finished 0-4. Cesar Suarez, Garrett Groce, and Rhyne Hughes each went 2-5 with Hughes adding two RBI.

With the win, the Rays earn a split in the four game series against Fort Wayne. Southwest Michigan will try to make it three straight on Monday night against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. First pitch is at 7:05 pm and it's "Munchie Monday" at the ballpark. Monday's special is $1.00 popcorn. -KV
