Kernels defense breaks down in 4-3 loss to Dayton
July 2, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
July 2, 2006 - Two costly errors in the eighth inning lead to two unearned Dayton runs and wiped out a Kernels 7th inning rally as they fell to the Dragons 4-3, in front of a crowd of 2,480 on Freedom Festival Day at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Fielding errors on Hainley Statia on a sure double-play ball and a hot smash to Mark Trumbo that handcuffed the big first baseman sustained a Dayton rally that saw the Dragons push across two runs without the benefit of a base hit.
Ryan Aldridge (1-3) was tagged with the loss as he struggled a bit with his control, walking two and hitting Jay Bruce to let the tying and winning runs score.
The Kernels lead 1-0 as Larry Infante singled and scored on a Hainley Statia double in the first. Then, Dallas Morris launched his 6th home run of the season in the third to make the score 2-0.
Dayton tied the game with single runs in the fourth and seventh on solo home runs by Bobby Mosby and Adam Rosalles.
Logan Ondrusek (3-2) picked up the win in relief of starter Carlos Fisher. Justin Mallett earned his second save with two innings of scoreless work.
The Kernels appeared to have scored the winning run in the bottom of the 7th as Madison Edwards drew a walk and stole second base. He advanced to third on a Morris ground out and then with two outs, Brad Coon beat out an infield single on a very close play at first, allowing Edwards to score from third and give the Kernels a 3-2 lead.
The Kernels offense continued to improve as they collected nine hits on the day. Hainley Statia continues to swing the hot bat, going 3-4 today to raise his season average to .291 and Brad Coon improved to .271 with a 2 for 4 effort today.
Anthony Ortega pitched well in his first start for the Kernels. Ortega pitched 5-1/3 innings and allowed only one run on five hits. He struck out six and walked four and left the game leading 2-0, but was saddled with a no-decision.
The Kernels welcome the Burlington Bees to Veterans Memorial Stadium for a four-game series on Monday at 2 pm. The Kernels will don 1906 Cedar Rapids Bunnies throwback uniforms for the game - the uniforms can be won via a silent auction that will be held during the game. Bring your appetite as it will also be a Mix 96.5 FM and WMT AM 600 Dollar Dog Monday as regular hot dogs are just a buck. Gates open at 1 pm.
