St. Lucie Mets News Release
TAMPA, Fla. - For the second straight game, the St. Lucie Mets pitched a shutout against the Tampa Yankees. After clobbering the Yankees 10-0 in game 2 on Monday, the Mets edged the Yankees 2-0 on Tuesday at Steinbrenner Field.
Andrew Church held the Yankees off the board for 6.1 innings to earn his first Florida State League win in his second start. Church walked seven batters at Dunedin last week but did not walk any Yankees on Tuesday and struck out four.
Domingo Tapia, Paul Paez and Corey Taylor combined to retired eight batters in a row to end the game. Taylor recorded his eighth save.
The Mets scored the run they needed in the sixth when Jonathan Johnson ripped his first home run of the season into the short porch in right field.
Amed Rosario delivered an insurance run in the eighth when he singled home John Mora.
Rosario and Mora both went 3 for 4. Mora has six hits in the last two games while Rosario registered his seventh three-hit game of the season.
The big sequence in the game came in the bottom of the seventh. With the Mets clinging to a 1-0 lead, the Yankees loaded the bases on two singles off of Church and a walk from Tapia. Tapia fell behind Jake Skole 3-1 but rallied to strike him out on a borderline change up. Wes Wilson followed with a bloop into shallow center that short stop Luis Guillorme ran down full speed.
The Mets improved to 6-2 on their nine-game road trip. They are now just two games back of first place Bradenton with five games to go in the first half, although Bradenton holds the tie-breaker so the Mets are essentially three out.
Next Up: The Mets (32-31, 2nd) go for the series victory over the Yankees (40-24) at Steinbrenner Field on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
