Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE, FL - Ryan McBroom launched a go-ahead three-run home run in the seventh inning, and the Charlotte Stone Crabs fell to the Dunedin Blue Jays 4-1 on Monday night at Charlotte Sports Park.
The game had been tied 1-1 for nearly an hour when Mike Franco (2-2) entered the game for Charlotte in the seventh. Gunnar Heidt, called up to Dunedin just a few hours before first pitch, doubled to lead off the inning and went to third on a Jonathan Davis bunt. Richard Urena walked, putting runners on the corners with one out, but Franco coaxed a lineout to second from Derrick Loveless for the second out.
Just when it looked like Franco would escape with the tie intact, McBroom stepped in. The Blue Jays' No. 27 prospect demolished the second pitch off the roof of the tiki bar in left-center field, putting Dunedin ahead for good. It was McBroom's ninth home run of the year, tying him for third in the Florida State League with Clearwater's Mitch Walding.
A home run brought the Blue Jays their first run against Benton Moss. Emilio Guerrero bashed his fourth dinger of the year out to left-center on the first pitch of the second inning, putting the Blue Jays up 1-0. It was all Moss would allow in the game, as he left after five innings in a tie.
The Stone Crabs tied the game up in the fourth against Blue Jays starter Conner Greene (3-4). With two out, Justin Williams rocketed a double to the wall in right-center. Alec Sole stepped up and mashed a triple into the right-field corner, scoring Williams and tying the game.
However, the Stone Crabs managed just three baserunners the rest of the way. Tim Mayza and Carlos Ramirez combined to retire the final eight Charlotte batters.
The series continues on Tuesday night at Charlotte Sports Park. RHP Greg Harris (4-4, 3.00) takes the mound for Charlotte against Dunedin RHP Taylor Cole (0-0, 2.70). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35.
