Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
(LAKELAND, FL) - The Lakeland Flying Tigers put the long ball to good use by scoring four times in the first inning as they posted an 8-3 victory over the Fort Myers Miracle on Tuesday evening. The Miracle have now dropped the first three games of this series at Henley Field in Lakeland, and four straight overall after opening this long road trip with three wins at Brevard County.
After a wild pitch helped the Miracle take an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, the Flying Tigers broke the game open in a big way in the bottom of the inning off of Fort Myers starter Tyler Jay. With two outs and runner on second, Kade Scivicque, Mike Gerber, and Joey Pankake hit back-to-back-to-back homeruns to put Lakeland in control by a 4-1 score.
The Miracle were able to close the gap to 4-2 in the third. Tanner Witt doubled with one out, and then came in to score one out later on Nick Gordon's triple.
The host Flying Tigers quickly answered by scoring twice in the bottom of the frame on RBI singles by Pankake and Wade Hinkle to push their advantage to 6-2.
Fort Myers closed to within 6-3 on an RBI single off the bat of Brian Olson in the top of the fifth inning, but Lakeland added two more runs without the benefit of a hit in the bottom of the frame, taking advantage of four walks, a hit batter, and a wild pitch, to close out the game's scoring at 8-3.
Malvin Martinez (1-0), the second of three Lakeland pitchers, pitched two-and-two-thirds innings of scoreless baseball to earn the win. Jay (5-5), who allowed eight hits and six runs over three innings, suffered the loss for the Miracle.
The Miracle (30-34) and Flying Tigers (33-30) will play the final game of this four-game set on Wednesday night. The first pitch at historic Henley Field in Lakeland will take place at 6:00 p.m. The game will not be broadcast on www.miraclebaseball.com.
