METROSTARS SIGN DARIN LEWIS AS TEAM'S THIRD SR. INTERNATIONAL: MetroStars President/General Manager Nick Sakiewicz announced today that the team has signed forward Darin Lewis, a native of Trinidad who led the University of Connecticut to the 2000 NCAA championship and played last season for the A-League's Portland Timbers, as their third senior international player.

"Darin is a tremendous offensive talent who helps provide us with yet one more dangerous option in our attack, and gives us more depth on our front line than we've ever had in our team's history," said Sakiewicz. "And most importantly, he's a finisher."

The 25-year-old Lewis, a native of Tunapuna, Trinidad, was named Most Outstanding Offensive Player at the 2000 NCAA College Cup after leading Connecticut to the national title, scoring the second goal in their decisive 2-0 championship win over Creighton. Lewis also led the Huskies to the NCAA semifinals as a junior, one year after transferring in from national junior college powerhouse Mercer County (NJ) College, whom he had led to two straight national JUCO final fours in 1997 and 1998.

In two years at Connecticut, Lewis tallied 60 total points (21 goals, 18 assists) in 49 games.

Lewis brings the number of senior internationals on the MetroStars roster to the MLS maximum of three, as he joins Rodrigo Faria (Brazil) and Diego Serna (Colombia).

Lewis has not yet been assigned a jersey number.

HELLO, COLUMBUS (AGAIN): After taking the Easter weekend off from MLS competition, the MetroStars return to action this Saturday, April 6 against the Columbus Crew at Crew Stadium (7:30 p.m. ET, MSG TV, WADO 1280 AM Radio).

Both teams met last Wednesday, a 1-0 Crew victory at Giants Stadium, in the second game of the season for both teams. The MetroStars played without forward/midfielder Clint Mathis, who was in Germany with the U.S. National Team (two goals in a 4-2 loss at Rostock), while Columbus played without forward Brian McBride.

Both Mathis and goalkeeper Tim Howard are currently with the national team in Denver, CO for this Wednesday's friendly against Mexico (10 p.m. ET, Telemundo), though both players will rejoin the MetroStars for Saturday's game against the Crew.

Last Wedneday's win gave the Crew a 13-8 all-time edge in head-to-head matchups against the MetroStars. McBride remains the Crew's all-time leading scorer against the MetroStars with 17 points (6G, 5A) in 16 games, while Tab Ramos, who made his 2002 season debut last week against the Crew, leads the MetroStars all-time with five points (1G, 3A) in 10 games against Columbus.

PRACTICE SCHEDULE: The MetroStars will train on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 10 a.m. each day at their practice facility at Kean University-East Campus in Union, NJ. The time of Friday's practice session is still to be determined, but the team will leave from Kean for Newark Airport at 3:45 p.m. for their 5:25 p.m. flight to Columbus.
