Last Match
Earthquakes 0, Rapids 1; Saturday, March 30,
2002; INVESCO Field; Denver, CO
The defending Major League Soccer Champion San Jose Earthquakes lost their first match of the 2002 season 1-0 to the Colorado Rapids in front of 25,010 fans at the first-ever MLS game played at INVESCO Field. The Quakes out-shot the Rapids 24-12, but could not come back from an early deficit and tie the game. The Rapids broke out to a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute of the match on a goal by midfielder Mark Chung. John Spencer forced a turnover outside the Quakes 18-yard box and fired a low shot on goal that Quakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon saved. The rebound fell to Chris Henderson, who hit a second shot that Cannon blocked. The ball bounced out to Chung 15 yards from goal and he slotted it in the far post to put the Rapids in front. A combination between Donovan and De Rosario almost produced a goal in the 26th minute. De Rosario played a one-two with Donovan and then broke into the Rapids box, before playing another pass back to Donovan. Donovan faked a shot and slid a pass to De Rosario to the left of Rapids goalkeeper Scott Garlick. De Rosario took a touch and drove a low shot towards the near post that slid a foot wide. Quakes defender Jimmy Conrad had a header cleared off the goal line in the 68th minute by Henderson. Mulrooney sent a corner kick to the penalty spot that Conrad headed down to the near post, where Henderson was positioned. Henderson cleared the ball out of danger to keep the Rapids on top. Ariel Graziani almost had his first goal in an Earthquakes jersey in the 76th minute with a close range blast. After a cross into the box, Graziani picked up the loose ball and hit a hard shot that was blocked by the Rapids Pablo Mastroeni.
Last Match vs. Revolution
Earthquakes 5, Revolution 1; August 8, 2001;
Foxboro Stadium, Foxboro, MA
The San Jose Earthquakes dominated the New England Revolution 5-1 at Foxboro Stadium with a club-record two-goal, two-assist performance from Landon Donovan and two goals from Junior Agogo to lead the rout. Donovan scored his fifth goal of the season in the 35th minute to put the Quakes up 1-0. Ian Russell picked up a Revolution turnover and sent a long ball to Donovan, who had broken behind the Revolution defense. Donovan then shook off a Revolution defender and slid a shot past Revolution goalkeeper Jeff Causey. The Quakes stretched their lead to two goals in the 39th minute on a penalty kick by Donovan. Donovan created the play that resulted in the penalty by playing a give-and-go and getting free inside the penalty area. He then slid a pass across the goalmouth to Manny Lagos. Lagos hit a low shot that Revolution defender Mauricio Wright blocked with his arm. Wright was given a red card for his handball, and Donovan slotted home the penalty kick for a 2-0 lead. Revolution midfielder Cate cut the deficit in half with a penalty kick of his own in the 44th minute. Lagos was whistled for a foul on Leonel Alvarez in the 18-yard box, and Cate drove his penalty kick into the net to make it a one-goal game going into halftime. The second half was all San Jose as Agogo notched his first goal as an Earthquake in the 68th minute off an assist from Donovan. Three minutes later Donovan slid a pass to Manny Lagos at the top of the 18-yard box, and Lagos buried his fifth goal of the season into the corner. Russell and Ramiro Corrales assisted Agogo in the 80th minute for the fifth goal of the night for the Quakes.

Dayak vs. the Revolution
Quakes defender Troy Dayak has had great success playing against the New England Revolution in his career, as he has scored five of his seven career goals against them. In his first season in MLS, Dayak had two goals against the Revs on August 11, after notching an assist against them earlier in the season (May 4). In 1997, Dayak again tormented New England, scoring on May 16 and on July 6. Last season, after a two-year hiatus from MLS due to injuries, the Tracy, Calif. resident demonstrated that he had not lost his touch against the Revolution, scoring the Quakes first goal at Spartan Stadium in 2001 on May 5.
Whitecap in Camp
Jason Jordan, a 23-year old forward for the Vancouver Whitecaps of the A-League has arrived in San Jose to participate in training camp at the invitation of Earthquakes Head Coach Frank Yallop. Jordan, the Whitecaps' 2001 Player of the Year and leading goal scorer (9 goals and 6 assists in 18 matches), also trained during the 2002 preseason with the Colorado Rapids and scored a goal vs. European powerhouse Benfica during the Rapids' tour of Portugal.
Shutout Milestone
The San Jose Earthquakes All-Star goalkeeper, Joe Cannon, registered his 19th career shutout in the Quakes 2002 season opener, a 2-0 victory over the Dallas Burn on March 23. When Cannon records his next shutout, he will join an elite group of only five other MLS goalkeepers who have recorded 20 or more shutouts in their career.
De Rosario Perfect
The San Jose Earthquakes are a perfect 6-0 in games in which Canadian international Dwayne De Rosario scores a goal in the regular season. Last season, De Rosario had five regular season goals for the Quakes, and in each match the Quakes came out victorious. In the playoffs, De Rosario's magic continued as he scored two goals, one in the Quakes 4-0 win over Miami in Game 2 of the semifinals, and the game-winning goal in the MLS Cup Final. Including playoffs, the Quakes are now 8-0 when De Rosario hits the back of the net.
FC Champions Cup on Tap
Landon Donovan registered one goal and one assist on Saturday, March 16 at Sheldon Florin Community Stadium for the Earthquakes in a 3-1 win over CD Olimpia that put them in the quarterfinals of the 2002 Football Confederation Champions Cup. The match was played in front of a sold-out crowd of 3,300 fans. San Jose moves on from the Round of 16 by outscoring Olimpia 4-1 on aggregate goals, following the Earthquakes 1-0 victory over CD Olimpia in the away leg on March 13. The Quakes will now face Pachuca of Mexico in the quarterfinals, as Pachuca advanced over Defense Force FC of Trinidad & Tobago 4-1 on aggregate goals.
Scoring First
During the 2001 regular season, the San Jose Earthquakes had the best record in MLS when scoring the first goal, going 13-0-2 in those contests. The Quakes began 2002 in the same fashion as they hit the net first and went on to a 2-0 win over the Dallas Burn on Saturday night. Including last season's playoffs, the Quakes are 18-0-2 in their last 20 games when scoring first.
End of Game Situations
The Earthquakes defense, which allowed a league-low five goals in the final fifteen minutes of a game in 2001, continued to perform well at the end of games in its first two games of the 2002 season. The Earthquakes extended their streak of not allowing a goal in the final 15 minutes of a match to 24 games. The Quakes last allowed a goal in the last fifteen minutes on May 30, 2001 against the Colorado Rapids.
