Kansas City Monarchs News Release

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Behind an impressive one-hitter from starter Jared Messer, the Kansas City T-Bones defeated the Joplin Blasters, 5-0, in game one of their doubleheader Friday evening at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.

Messer (3-0), who is usually a relief pitcher for the T-Bones, was making just his second start of the season, and ended up striking out four batters and not allowing a walk in 7 complete innings. His no-hit bid was broken up in the top of the seventh inning by Maikol Gonzalez, who singled down the third-base line.

The T-Bones struck first in the first inning, taking a 2-0 lead off Joplin starter Reyes Dorado (1-3). The first run came off a sacrifice fly to left from Jake Blackwood that drove in Starlin Rodriguez, giving the T-Bones a 1-0 lead. After a double by Adam Bailey, Vladimir Frias singled to right two batters later, driving in Bailey from second base, and giving the T-Bones their second run of the game.

Kansas City added two more runs in the second inning, extending their lead to 4-0. Sergio Leon reached base on a bunt single, and, three batters later, scored on a passed ball. On the next pitch, Jake Blackwood singled to center, scoring Rodriguez and giving the T-Bones their fourth run of the game. Blackwood gave Kansas City its fifth run in the fourth inning on a solo home run to left, his second homer in as many games.

After snapping their seven-game losing streak with the win in game one, the T-Bones (42-40) will finish their doubleheader Friday night against the Joplin Blasters (43-40), before the two teams are scheduled play Saturday night at 7:05. Tickets are available by calling the Providence Medical Center Box Office at CommunityAmerica Ballpark at 913-328-5618.
