St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (August 20, 2015) - The St. Paul Saints can be thankful of one thing when the playoffs start on September 9: the international extra inning rule will not be in effect. The Saints fell to 2-4 in games that go at least 11 innings, where a runner starts at second base to begin the 11th, losing 8-6 on Thursday night in front of a single-game franchise record of 10,430 at CHS Field.
With the game tied at five in the 11th, and Tim Colwell starting the inning at second, Matty Johnson walked on a full count and Colwell swiped third on ball four. Michael Lang made it 6-5 with an RBI single. A sacrifice fly by Rene Tosoni made it 7-5 and an RBI double by Noah Perio gave the Explorers an 8-5 lead.
Without any more arms the Explorers were forced to turn to a position player, Brock Kjeldgaard. With Dan Kaczrowski at second, Kjeldgaard unleashed a wild pitch moving Kaczrowski to third. Willie Argo walked. A sacrifice fly by Ryan Lashley made it a two run game. Vinny DiFazio walked to put runners at first and second. On a 3-0 count Angelo Songco flew out to right for the second out. Mike Kvasnicka walked to load the bases. Nate Hanson hit the ball on the button, but lined out to left to end the game.
The Saints jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first when Argo led off with a walk and Lashley hit a two-run homer, his third of the season.
The Explorers had an answer in the top of the second as they collected five consecutive singles with one out. Ryan Court and Tommy Mendonca collected the first two. Matt Koch knocked home a run to make it 2-1. Tim Colwell laid down a bunt for a base hit that scored a run to tie the game at two. Johnson's single loaded the bases and a fielder's choice by Michael Lang scored a run to make it 3-2.
In the third the Saints regained the lead when Lashley and DiFazio had back-to-back singles to start the inning. Angelo Songco followed with a three-run blast, his 15th of the season, to make it 5-3 Saints. Songco now has 78 RBI, two shy of tying the single-season franchise record.
In the fifth the Explorers tied it as Lang led off with a walk. Tosoni doubled him home to make it 5-4. Kjeldgaard's RBI single tied the game at five.
The Saints begin a three game series against the Sioux Falls Canaries on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Robert Coe (8-3, 2.77). It is Xcel Energy Friday Night Fireworks with the music of Hee Haw. The Saints will also induct Mike Arbuckle into the Killebrew Root Beer Professional Baseball Scouts Hall of Fame. The game can be seen on the Saints Cable Network, cable access channels in the Twin Cities area, heard on Club 1220 KLBB and in the ballpark on 97.9 FM.
