St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN - After battling the Sioux City Explorers in a grueling four hour and 21 minute affair the night before at CHS Field, the Saints needed a lengthy outing from a starter to rest a depleted bullpen. Robert Coe came through and then some with a 9.0 inning complete game effort as the Saints went on to win 5-2 over Sioux Falls in front of 9,303 at CHS Field Friday night.

Coe came out pumping right from the start and punched out the second and third hitters for the Canaries in the first to retire the side in order. Coe got into a jam in the second inning, but got some help from his defense. RJ Perucki rounded third, after a Richard Stock double, with two outs in the second before being thrown out on a relay through by Steve Nikorak.

In the home half of the second with two outs, Nate Hanson doubled to left center for his first hit in a Saints uniform. A routine throw across the diamond on a ground ball from Nikorak was airmailed by Perucki allowing Hanson to score an unearned run and give the Saints a 1-0 lead.

A pair of mistakes by Coe in the fourth would put the Canaries on top after they had only managed one hit off the 27-year old right hander through the first 3.0 innings. With one out, Coe hit David Bergin with a pitch and Jason Repko clobbered a two-run shot to left field to make it 2-1 Canaries.

In the fifth, the Saints benefitted from a second Sioux Falls error after the Saints had runners at the corners with two outs. With Alonzo Harris trying to swipe second, Richard Stock's throw skipped by Brett Balkan covering the bag and allowed Nikorak to score and tie the ballgame at 2-2.

The Saints offense answered with a three spot in the seventh inning and put Robert Coe in the driver's seat to pick up his ninth win of the year. After a leadoff single by Willie Argo, Nate Hanson smashed a line drive over the wall in the left to give the Saints a 4-2 lead and cap off a 2-3 breakout performance for the newest member of the Saints after an 0-11 start. Alonzo Harris capped off the inning with a solo home run, his ninth of the season, to put the Saints up 5-2.

Angelo Songco made things interesting in the ninth with an error that would give the Canaries offense some life late. Songco dropped the low throw across the diamond from Hanson on what would have been the third out. With runners at the corners and two outs Coe got RJ Perucki to pop out to first to end the ballgame.

It was the third complete game for Coe this season as he went the distance allowing just two runs on three hits while walking two and striking out seven to improve to 9-3.

The Saints will face off in game two of the three game series against the Canaries on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. The Saints starter is to be determined while the Canaries will send RHP - Shawn Blackwell (2-9, 4.40).The Saints will celebrate the 60th Anniversary of St. Paul and Nagasaki, Japan as sister cities. The game can be seen on the Saints Cable Network, cable access channels in the Twin Cities area, and in the ballpark on 97.9 FM. There is no radio for Saturday night's game.
