Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
WILMINGTON, DE - The Blue Rocks plated five unanswered runs, including a 10th inning walk-off single to center from Omar Meregildo, to earn a 5-4, come-from-behind win on Saturday night at Frawley Stadium in Wilmington. The win snapped a Blue Rocks two-game losing skid.
Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Jordy Barley led off with a walk, and then advanced to second base on a throwing error from BlueClaws relief pitcher Andrew Baker. Cole Daily followed with a hit-and-run infield single to third base. Yasel Antuna stepped up and smacked an RBI double to right-center field to plate the Rocks' first run of the night. With Israel Pineda batting, Jersey Shore's Baker fired a wild pitch, as Daily scored and Antuna moved up to third. With one-out, Baker balked which plated Antuna for the third run. With two outs in the inning, Drew Mendoza smashed a solo homerun into the Ferris Home Improvements Blue Rocks bullpen to knot the score at 4-4.
After reliever Zack Brzykcy and the Blue Rocks closed out the BlueClaws in the top in the 10th inning, which included an attempted squeeze bunt from Johan Rojas, the Rocks manufactured the winning run in the bottom half of the inning. Barley started the 10th at second base and Daily laid down a bunt single to the left field side. Antuna followed a sacrifice bunt, which moved the runners up one base each. The BlueClaws brought in reliever Aidan Anderson, who allowed a long fly ball from Meregildo to left-center field. After a full-extension attempt from Rojas, the ball came free when he hit the ground, which allowed Daily to score and the Rocks to walk it off.
The ballgame started with a game time temperature of 92 degrees, and Ethan Wilson smacked a two-run, first-inning home run, to give the BlueClaws a 2-0 advantage. The bats then cooled down until Wilson brought the heat again in the eighth inning, when he added a two-run double to make it 4-0.
On the night, the Rocks pitching staff allowed just four hits while they fanned seven batters on strikes. Mitchell Parker started and went four innings, while Carlos Romero threw two and two-thirds innings in scoreless relief. Luis Avilan pitched one inning while Ike Schlabach threw two-thirds innings in relief. Brzykcy moved to 5-0 out of the bullpen on the year with two scoreless innings for the victory.
The Blue Rocks wrap-up the six-game homestand with the BlueClaws on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. Gates open at 11:30 a.m.
