Memphis Redbirds News Release
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Redbirds began a six-game road trip with an 6-5 loss at the Gwinnett Stripers on Tuesday night at Coolray Field.
Memphis grabbed the lead with three runs in the top of the first inning. Shortstop Thomas Saggese smoked a double down the left-field line to plate the first two runs. Third baseman Cesar Prieto singled Saggese home a few pitches later to put the Redbirds up 3-0. Gwinnett answered with four runs in the bottom of the first.
With two outs in the top of the ninth inning, left fielder Jared Young smacked his second home run of the season, a two-run shot to pull Memphis within one. The Redbirds went 3-for-9 with runners in scoring position on the night and left just five runners on base.
Right-handed pitcher Michael McGreevy (1-2) allowed five runs on eight hits, walked four and struck out five in his 5.1-inning start. Four runs on four hits scored against McGreevy in the first inning.
The Memphis Redbirds return to AutoZone Park to begin a six-game series against the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (Triple-A, Miami Marlins) on Tuesday, April 23 with first pitch for 6:45 p.m. CDT.
