Iowa Cubs News Release
Andres Torres extended his hitting streak to a season high 13 games but it wasn't enough as the Memphis Redbirds defeated the Cubs 6-2 Sunday afternoon at Principal Park.
Iowa, riding a four game winning streak, was held in check by Memphis starter Mitchell Boggs (3-1) who allowed only three hits and a pair of unearned runs in six innings of work to pick up the win.
Memphis, who led the entire game, jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI double by catcher Matt Pagnozzi.
The Redbirds built up a 4-0 lead in the fifth on RBI doubles by Nick Stavinoha and Josh Phelps.
The Cubs picked up their first run of the afternoon in the sixth on a bases loaded walk by Josh Kroeger. A wild pitch by Memphis reliever Mark Worrell brought in pinch hitter Corey Coles to make it a 4-2 game.
Memphis answered in the top half of the seventh adding a pair of runs to make for the 6-2 final.
The Cubs, looking for their first series sweep of the season, were held to just five hits in the game, including a bunt single by Torres along the first baseline with one out in the eight inning.
Iowa starter Randy Keisler (0-3) took the loss giving up 10 hits, four runs, three earned in six innings of work.
