Scorching Bats Give Sidewinders 17-14 Win Over Tacoma

Tucson, AZ - The bats were hot at Tucson Electric Park Saturday night with the Sidewinders out slugging the Tacoma Rainiers 17-14. Tucson and Tacoma put up a total of 31 runs and 42 hits in nine innings of play, with every Tucson starter getting at least a hit and a run in the game. Tucson fell four hits shy in the game of tying their franchise record of 28.

Tacoma's Charlton Jimerson hit a grand slam in the first inning to give the Rainiers 4-0 lead, but Alex Romero and Trot Nixon quickly cut Tacoma's lead to two with an RBI single and double respectively.

Tacoma put one up in the second and Tucson answered back with five in the bottom of the frame. Romero brought in two of the runs, Josh Whitesell drove in one from a double to right, and a Nixon's single plated two to give the Sidewinders a 7-5 lead.

Both teams put a run up in the third, but in the fourth Tacoma regained the lead with a four run fourth inning. The Sidewinders came back and tied it in bottom of the fourth when a Matt Morgan single and a Trent Oeltjen double brought in a run apiece tying the game 10-10.

Tucson tacked on six runs in the seventh when Jamie D'Antona broke the tied ball game with a double to left bringing in two runs. The Sidewinders got their other runs on RBI singles by Donnie Kelly and Emilio Bonifacio, a wild pitch scoring pinch-runner Jesus Merchan, and a ground out to first that brought in Matt Morgan.

Six Sidewinders had at least three hits in the outburst, with Jamie D'Antona leading the way with 4 knocks. All Tucson's 17 runs were scored without hitting a home run.

The Sidewinders will face the Tacoma Rainiers in the last game of the series starting at 12:00 PM on Sunday afternoon. RHP Max Scherzer (0-0, 1.17) is scheduled to start for Tucson. Right- hander R.A. Dickey (1-1, 2.40) will start for the Rainiers. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 11:50 am.
