Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
Jenrry Mejia made his AA debut and pitched seven strong innings and Lucas Duda hit a walk-off double to help lead Binghamton to a 1-0 eight-inning victory in game one of Saturday's doubleheader versus the Connecticut Defenders. Mike Antonini pitched well in the night cap but the B-Mets feel short 5-3 in 10 innings.
Lucas Duda's walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the eighth came off Connecticut reliever Daniel Otero and proved to be the lone run in the game. Josh Thole reached to begin the rally in the eighth on an error. He hit a ground ball to Brett Pill at first and his throw was muffed by Otero who was covering the bag, allowing Thole to reach. Duda followed with an opposite-field drive that bounded away from Bobby Felmy allowing Thole to come all the way around from first to score the winning run.
Meijia was fantastic in his Binghamton debut, giving up no runs on five hits in a seven inning no-decision. Roy Merritt picked up his second win of the season by pitching a scoreless eighth.
Connecticut (31-25) got a game winning double from Pill in the top of the tenth in game two and an insurance run was added on a single by Sharlon Schoop to yield the final 5-3 score.
Julio De La Cruz took his fourth loss of the season going one inning and giving up two runs.
Thole tied the game at three in the bottom of the ninth with a run scoring single to left with two outs.
Ruben Tejada hit his second home run to lead off the third inning, which gave Binghamton a 2-0 lead. After the Defenders got a run in the fifth, Pill went deep in the sixth to tie the game at two.
Binhamton (23-31) fell behind 3-2 in the ninth when pinch hitter Tyler LaTorre drove in Schoop from second off B-Mets reliever Edgar Ramirez.
Antonini left with a no decision, going seven innings giving up two runs on seven hits.
Binghamton will look to split the weekend series tomorrow. RHP Tobi Stoner (1-2, 2.81) will take the mound for the B-Mets and will be opposed by the Defenders' RHP Jesse Foppert (0-3, 5.65). The first pitch is slated for 1:05 and the radio broadcast on Newsradio 1290 WNBF begins at 12:50 with the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show.
