Meet the Chiefs 2015-16: Jason Fram
October 13, 2015 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Spokane Chiefs News Release
When you talk with Jason Fram, you come away impressed by his maturity and ability to successfully balance the athletic and academic demands upon his time.
Fram, a 6-foot, 191-pound defenseman from South Delta, B.C., is playing his fifth season as a member of the Spokane Chiefs. An eighth round pick in the 2010 WHL Bantam draft, he had an impressive camp as a 16-year-old and made the final roster.
"What I learned from that experience that I pass on to the younger guys is 'come to camp to make the team, not just to play'," he said. "You can only control how you play, so you create opportunities by giving it your best in every game and every practice."
Since that first camp, Fram has played 260 regular season games for the Chiefs, which puts him 25th in franchise history, between notable names Chris Bruton and Drayson Bowman. This season, he wears the captain's "C" for the second year, but he sees leadership as a shared responsibility among the older players.
"Whatever guys need, we'll do, to get the most from out of our team," he said. "Some guys need a pat on the shoulder, some need a kick in the rear."
Education has always been the top priority to Fram's mother Margaret and father Rod. He attended a private elementary school and eventually convinced his parents to allow him to attend South Delta Secondary School in Delta, B.C., which provides a hockey academy for players aspiring to an elite level. The one condition? Get straight A's, which he did.
His academic diligence has paid off during his time with Chiefs. Three years ago, he was Spokane's Scholastic Player of the Year and he is now enrolled in his fourth online university course. He completed the first one while still in high school.
When he's not playing hockey or studying, Fram is probably traveling or hiking; he took a long backpacking trip to Europe this past summer. His family loves outdoor activities and that's a big part of his life, too.
On and off the ice, Fram leads by doing the things he expects his teammates to also do. "We need to set an example day in and day out, working hard and putting in the time."
