Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Locked in a scoreless draw, third baseman Mike Olt delivered a three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth to give the Round Rock Express (57-45) a dramatic 3-0 victory over the Iowa Cubs (49-53) in the series finale Sunday night at Dell Diamond.
Right-hander Evan Meek was dominant throughout the evening, blanking the I-Cubs for eight strong innings. Iowa starter Barret Loux matched Meek frame-for-frame throughout his outing.
The Express had a golden opportunity in the second inning as a two-out rally sparked a bases loaded jam for Loux. A double off the bat of third baseman Mike Olt and back-to-back walks issued to left fielder Aaron Cunningham and first baseman Chris McGuiness filled the bases. Loux buckled down and fanned shortstop Leury Garcia to keep the E-Train off the board.
Loux went on to hold the Express scoreless through his 5.0 innings of work before handing the ball over to the bullpen. Round Rock's offense was kept quiet until the eighth when center fielder Jim Adduci began yet another two-out rally with a single and this time the Express cashed in. Right fielder Jared Hoying followed with a ground ball to shortstop, but Iowa middle infielder Tim Torres misread the ball which moved Adduci to third, putting runners on the corners for Olt. The power-hitting third baseman stepped to the plate and slammed his second homer in as many days, another three-run blast to put Round Rock ahead 3-0.
Right-hander Justin Miller entered the game for Round Rock in the ninth, nailing down the win with a perfect final frame that included two strikeouts.
Meek (5-4) earned his third straight victory while Iowa reliever Brian Schlitter (0-2) was tagged with the loss after serving up the Olt home run in the eighth.
The Express will not hit the road for four games in Memphis starting Monday night at 7:05 p.m. Southpaw Ryan Feierabend (4-3, 3.97 ERA) will take the mound for Round Rock while the Redbirds counter with right-hander Scott McGregor (4-5, 5.13 ERA).
